Too many ideas

Post by Titus-a-fishus »

Greetings Gents
Have been looking and reading and lurking for a few weeks now.
Too many ideas....
Too much information
Overloaded my small brain with stuff to think about. :? :? :? :? :?

So here's my story
Lent a still from an old dear some years ago
You know the ones..... single marble... uuurrrrghhhh
The metho it turned out was put through carbon filters and eventually turned out good

Lost interest for some time ..... UNTIL
Saw this site :D :D :D

Have since started to build a pot still with scrubbers and a condenser from designs in a book on Moonshine.
Am up to the 50lt Keg fitting to the column and resealing the lid I cut out last weekend.
Have made a flange of sorts from a 50mm/2" copper tube this weekend ready for the connection between the column and flange

Looking forward to learning more and writing less

Welcome aboard.

You know what they say about ideas.

Aren't scrubbers usless in a potstill?? Maybe post what type of column you are planing to build.

Thanks for the Welcome Gents

Actually I was being nasty to my own distilling and the reflux still I was using.
The ethanol tasted badly of metho - so I threw it into a 12ltr container with lots of activated carbon for about three months
That got rid of the taste :) :)

Distilled a fair bit over the next couple of years and drank most of it as well :D
Life interfered and I returned the still to the 74 year old that had lent it to me

Having found this site rekindled the interest
I built a column which should be a reflux
But reading some of the threads/ posts on the forum it seems it may just be a potstill with scrubbers

Will post a thread on that in First section soon.
It hasn't been finished yet.

Cheers

You don't need to cut the keg if you are using a 2" flange.
A potstill is still a potstill whether you use scrubbers or not, a reflux still is a completely different kettle of fish.

Welcome, Titus-a-fishus...

Take your time to do plenty of research before starting your build... Bouncing your ideas off the members here could save you some work... Take advantage of the centuries worth of experience we have to offer...

Good luck...

I second RAD's comments on posting your design and ideas before building. I would imagine if you polled the users of this site for lessons learned, it would have been more research before taking out the copper and torch :-). The book you have may be OK, but the collective minds on this site are incredible. Welcome aboard.

Gotchya, a play on words

Sounds like you have a pretty good grasp on what is going on. Still would be nice to see still build pics. :)
