What's stronger?

Post by TonyL »

What's stronger?

1 Cup of 3.5%abv beer
or
1 Cup of 3.5%abv distilled spirit (diluted)

When drank, will the distilled spirit be stronger even though it's the same ABV? Answers?

Yeah it's a noob question. Just answer it.

Both will be the same... 3.5% Alcohol By Volume is just that...

Example:

100 ounces of 3.5% beer with contain 3.5 ounces of alcohol...
100 ounces of neutral spirits diluted to 3.5% ABV will contain 3.5 ounces of alcohol...

it just pondered me if the distillation did anything to the alcohol compared to the undistilled liquid. thanks for clearing that up.

It does do something to the 'overall' product. It allows one to separate out, and remove just the parts they want to. Thus the original beer has it all. The distilled spirit has just what wanted to remove (or was 'talented' enough to remove).

However, by your example, both contain exactly the same amount of ethanol. Now, if you had asked about how much methanol, or propanol (sp), or ethyl acetate, or acetone were in each 100oz amount, then it 'may' be that the distilled but diluted material would have significantly less of these items. This is one of the key facts within distilled products. NOTE, it will still depend upon the still, the distiller running it, etc. Someone that knows wft they are doing, running a full column, and taking only proper center cut, can produce a drink that is pretty much 100% ethanol / water mix, without the other nasties.

In that case, if you diluted that to 3.5% and compared it to beer, comparing for these 'other' alcohols, then the percentage would be much less.

Keep in mind, that ethanol is still the largest (by far) volatile component from a ferment.

Husker cleared that up a bit more... You'll notice that I used the word "alcohol" intentionally rather than going into the details about ethanol and other alcohol constituents... Same overall percentage based on ABV, but different individual percentages of constituents... You'd be able to drink more 3% dilution of neutral spirits before having to worry about a hangover...

Yes good points by H.

Hell I can't even drink a single beer without feeling like shit after.

Give me some strictly stilled likker any time.

i guess what i really meant to ask is what would make someone more drunk...
drinking 5 cups of 3.5abv beer
or
drinking 5 cups of 3.5abv distilled spirit

in that case id vote for the beer, it is carbonated also has more "other alcohols" that makes you feel shit facet.

This is a really strange thread, weird in fact. IMHO of course.

HeHe, lead goes down quicker and beer is stronger. Beer should have a few more nasties in it, will get you pissed more faster, and give a bigger better hangover. Beer brewers go to great lengths to brew the cleanest brew and they do a great job. Stillers don't care as much with the brew because they can clean it up in the stillin and the cuts. So it depends...a good beer brewer can make a cleaner product than a poor stiller and versa visa.

Beer is carbonated and CO2 + alcohol makes you drunk faster. So you can drink more distilate then beer (equel ABV offcourse)
