Malting @ home Experiment

Post by sed8ted »

Hello all I've wanted to try malting at home, so i did read alot of different posts, and everybody has a method. So I tried my hand at it. I've never done anything like this, but well here goes, I did take note every day, and it's still going on, as I'm not sure how to stop the growth so I can use it in a vodka mash(all grain) that I'm working on.
I am now looking for guidance, i would say it's about 50% shoots up the grain, and well not sure what the safe way to stop it so I don't kill it. (images from http://img8.imageshack.us/g/sample2mg.jpg/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow)

Anyways, I got the grain from my parents farm, no chemicals, just pure goodness...

Put grain into water and removed anything that floated to the top, put grain into 2 containers and covered with warm water.

Changed water around 9pm, some grains looked like they had swelled up.

Grain water appears dirty brown with bubbles forming on the top. I took a small handful out and placed on a paper towel to sit. I will be changing the water at 9pm, and Sunday place on a sheet.

Transferred to a tin, layered with wet paper towels on top.

Changed the paper towel and found some were sprouting

Seems to be sprouting very nicely, changed the paper towels and rolled them around to prevent molding
9:00am, changed paper towel, checked 3 grains, looks like almost 50% sprout up through the seed
6:30 came home from work, changed the paper towel, more sprouting, and looks nice.

You have a couple of choices. You can kiln the malt at 110f or so for 24-40 hours this will stop the malting. You can also crush it up and use it immediately as green malt.
Ideas are like rabbits. You get a couple and learn how to handle them, and pretty soon you have a dozen. John Steinbeck

They say you can also dry it in the sun. Just got to watch out for bugs. If you are stuck without an oven (or kiln) that can maintain proper temp (too high temp will denature the enzymes in the malt), you can try just spreading it out and using a fan to blow over it. Keep it turned over. And it should dry out just fine. Might take a few days...but it works.

thank you for the replys, and sorry about the pictures not showing. I hate using 3rd party image host's, anyways, would my kitchen oven work, if I spread them out thin and keep it on a low heat? or if I spread them out as is, and leave a fan on them for a few days? (turning it before work, after work and before bed)? All input is welcome..

and if this does work, I know next year I got a grain bin full of winter wheat to use, I just gotta do the planting myself... but would be nice to not have to buy anything other than the vodka yeast.... lol

Thanks again,
Andy

You don't have to use a third party image host... Simply use the attachment feature at the bottom of the post editor panel to upload and attach your images directly... There should be a sticky explaining the process somewhere... I know I did a post about it complete with pictures...
