Plastic storage bottles

Hi All,

I have read the posts recommending no use of plastics and I understand. I am curious though, why numerous Gin, Whiskey, Vodka at liquor store come in plastic bottles. Granted they are all 40%. Is it safe to use these empty bottles to store 40% and below product and low wines.

My understanding of the matter is that those bottles have a coating on the inside that breaks down over time. they're meant to be a one time use product, best to use them that way.

Also look at the quality of product that goes into those bottles. Can they do it? Yes. Should they do it? No. You aint gonna find any "high quality" shit in those bottles. And by "high quality", I mean my likker.

+1 RD... In Scotland we have an expiry date on bottled water... It's there because the plastics within the bottles begin to leach impurities over time...
Hot, cold shifts in temperature add to this practice making the water inside the container un-drinkable... It is law here for a retailer to sell anything that is over a certain time, out of date...

I have heard that PET is a good substitute on 40%abv, but have no tech info to back this up... Therefore I just wont use any plastic at all...

For the moment, I'll stick with glass. I keep my stock, once aged and cut, in large (5L) glass demijohns an when I want a bottle, I fill up the empty...

Ever notice how you find items in stores with expiration dates on them that had long shelf lives years ago...??? It's not the product that prompts the expiration date, it's the container... Packaging is now being made to be more rapidly biodegradable, meaning that if you try hoarding food the container will biodegrade before the contents spoils...

What's gonna happen when a plastic liquor bottle breaks down and the volatile spirits leak out... Hence the need for expiration dates on liquor stored in plastic...

+1 Rad, they are under the illusion that the spirit is not perishable, that may be so, but the tainted liquor from spending time in perishable plastics is never in doubt with them. But we know different... Expiry dates are needed across the board as far as spirits in plastic is concerned...
It will probably take a few store fires or a rise in kidney/liver failures before they cotton on to it... Not good...
