Greetings from the Desert

Post by madmonk »

Hello. I have been avidly reading on this site for a while now, thot I'd actually check in now. I am kinda new at this, tho I did some distilling in college chem and have been (sneakily)making wine off and on since I was 13  I have been thinking of a simple pot still to get started and am going to build my own, after reading up on other peoples ideas and "learning experiences". In fact, I avoided several initial errors by doing this. Thanks, all. Anyway, I am leaning toward a 3 or 4 gallon SS boiler and 1" copper pipe, and rum washes; hopefully to graduate to bourbon and sour mash (my first love). I am currently in the western American desert. My great-great grandpa was a West Virginian, so I guess I come by this honestly. :)

Sorry, I forgot to post my age. Let's just say I remember watching Armstrong's small step and giant leap. And the first half of my life was spent among teetotaling fundamentalist control freaks.

Welcome bloke,

Sounds like your doing the homework and have a game plan. Personally i wouldn't piss about with a 4 gal boiler. Get a 13gal /50lt keg...it takes the same effort, your washes are larger and give a good reward for time time spent. @ 4gal allowing head space in boiler...there's not a lot to be collected.
It would also better suit your end goal for whiskeys imho.

what ever you decide be safe and enjoy

cheers
