My first attempt at a plain sugar wash

Sugar, and all about sugar washes. Where the primary ingredient is sugar, and other things are just used as nutrients.

My first attempt at a plain sugar wash

Post by crazyk78 »

Hey all, tried my own sugar wash recipe before (which is probably a rip off of someone elses in another form)

120g Lowans Yeast
6Kg's Sugar
topped up to 25L
1 tablespoon of tomatoe past

*** I've got a heater in there at around 24deg C***

Mixed all these goodies up and put them in my fermenter and it was bubbling fairly steadily.

@ 1 day I added 3 teaspoons of DAP
@ 3 days I added 1 tablespoon of tomato paste (additional to the first)

I did this to try and give it a kick along.

I'ts been going for 7 days now and I want to know If I can do anything else to get it happening.
My SG is currently at 1.02

Thanks,
Dnderhead

You could try to get the yeast back into suspension by shaking the bucket but I would just wait.

Hope you git yerself caught up but you should'a used the All Bran Recipe if youv'e been tracking time.

More often than not that recipe is ready for the still in 4 days.

No matter. You'll git it,,,and life will become more tolerable.

And as Dnder suggests get yerself more than one fermenter in to service.

I seem to get slow ferments when using Lowans yeast.

Cheers.

My 3 - 4 day ferments have all been with Fleischmann's... Red Star takes longer than Fleischmann's with all recipes I've compared the two brands with... Never seen Lowan's around here so maybe it's only available in Australia... When in doubt, try another brand of yeast...

My own first sugar wash seemed to be very slow. What I did was to make a yeast bomb just use the yeast and what ever you used for nutrients and mix it in vigorously. First make sure that the ferment is stalled. best way I've found is to observe the vapor lock . I used my drill with piece of large gauge copper wire or SS rod, your choice, a slight bend in it . Use it like mixing paint. When I did that ferment would pick up speed. If not like in my case I gave the wash a yeast bomb and things took off with, stirred every day for 1 week.
If you don't know how to do it yourself, you don't have right to bitch, that you don't have any.

Found stuff in a yellow pkt. on the shelf next to Lowans, more expensive and no better... got a bucket full of bread yeast off a baker mate and it's all gone but dunno what brand it was.

I just use Lowans, it's good with no bad flavor in UJSSM and my rum, it's on it's 4th generation now and still going ok so I'm happy to wait for it to do it's thing.

Got some distillers yeast once but gotta order it online so couldnt be bothered anymore.

Cheers.

Hi crazyk,
I just read your post, i do wposw and find that keeping the wash at around 28 deg rather than 24 deg will cut a couple of days off the time to dry, of course the cooler the temp the cleaner the wash, so best to find a happy medium, i ferment at around 28 deg and it takes 7 days to finish a 27 litre wash.

Chees Braemar...yeah I could bump the temp up a little. I will have to try.

The wash I just did to 14 days to finish.

Too long, so I need to experiment a bit. I did look into the Tried and True recipe section, but they guys add all sorts of stuff and I just want a real simple sugar was recipe.

Ingredients I have at hand are

lowans yeast
DAP
Sugar
Citric Acid
Tomato paste

Hi crazyk,
I just do wposw as follows

5 kg. sugar make up to 27 litres sg 1.07
1 heaped teaspoon dap
1 pinch epsoms salts ( dont use too much)
1 teaspoon citric acid
1.25 cups of lowans yeast

As usual disolve the sugar in about 12 litres hot water.
Add dap and epsoms salts make sure it's all disolved.
Make up to 27 litres with cold water (should end up around 30 deg cel.)
Add citric acid & stir well to make sure its all disolved.
Pitch yeast on top & leave for around 20 minutes, then give it a good stir

I keep my wash at around 28 deg c. and it's normally finished in 7 or 8 days
Regards
Braemar
