Mayoral recall election was today

Post by Husker »

13.6k against 13.4k for (early voting, most likely).

Polls closed 45 min ago, and I wait for results. Sure wish I could cast my vote, but I live outside of city. Fukers can tax me, but give me no say so (other than collecting a shit load of signatures to get this put to ballot.).

Hope that fuker is put out soundly.

Yes - 19,280 50.4%
No - 18,974 49.6%

A little better. About 550 vote swing from last (first) 6k votes from people voting today. That is about the percentage I was expecting (Well, I was expecting a little higher than even that, but I am very biased).

Some mayor in Omaha, Ne, USA faced a recall election for wanting or doing raising taxes to make up a short fall in revenue.
Don't know if that Husker's mayor or not. Don't mater. Guess lots of politicians are in deep shit over revenue.

He survived the recall. 48.9% to kick him out, 51.1 to keep him.

A recall is a tool citizens can use. It has several steps. First there is a petition drive, where a certain percentage of signatures of valid registered voters must be obtained (10% of all registered voters, in 30 days). That was done. What that does is force a special election to happen. That election is simply yes he's out, or no he stays. That was the election last night, and the mayor survived that, and the results will likely hold up, even though there are some early ballots and provisional ballots still left to count.

If he had been recalled last night, then the steps are, 1. the city council would have appointed a mayor for short term. An election would be scheduled, probably for a month out or so. That would be the first mayoral election. At that election, if there was no one getting 50% or more (almost assured that there would be no 50% getter), then the top X (not sure the number) would face each other in a 2nd election.

But since he survived the recall, the process stops there, last night. Well, it will continue until all ballots have been counted, but I hold out no hopes that there can be that many ballots outstanding to win for recalling him.

Oh well, looks like the city unions pulled it off again.

Sorry Husker, sounds like you wanted a change, maybe it will happen in the next general election.

So, just how much did it cost to not get rid of this mayor...??? Of course it would have cost more if he had been recalled due to the additional steps that would have been required... I'm sure there aren't exact numbers, I'm just making a monetary point... Damned if you do, damned if you don't... Ain't politics great...

The bugger only just survived. He'd be a bit unhappy about that result.
