My pintoshine controler project did not work for me
Ok Been working on this since the summer had it mostly complete in August but my keg sat at a friends for a while getting tri clamp fittings welded to my keg. He is a welder at a nuclear power plant and they were in shutdown so i knew it was going to be a while so i put it to rest for a while with out testing. I got my keg back looking sweet so i fired her up and no dice. Nothing sparked i had voltage to both wires to the element but no heat. No idea what is wrong perhaps the part from the dimmer is not working don't know.
Is there any parts lists floating around to do this project without using the dimmer parts id like just to buy everything new and start over. Is there another way to do this project all together.
Its a 240v 4500w element
I have two digital controlers I was planing on using one with a ssr for a hot water set up for mashing and one just as a temp readout for my column head.

Not meant to be.Smokehouse Shiner wrote:Oooo burn......
I will say,, that based on the pics I'm looking at,,,,,,,,there sure is a lot of stuff in that work box.
Gotta handy lil amp meter in mine and a 100% variable speed switch. Everything fits in the 4" work box with room to spare. I too run a 4500 watt. But I recon i'll be moving to the 5500 watt when my current element shits the bed.
I got a spare I sell you for pretty cheap.
No matter
Good luck

How does the speed switch work? Do you have picture?LWTCS wrote:Not meant to be.Smokehouse Shiner wrote:Oooo burn......

Re: My pintoshine controler project did not work for me
so do the pids light up? are there any error codes? You gotta do a bunch of programming on those things you know. 1. Setup tempsensor input, 2. set it to manual mode, this makes it so there is a percent of power output to the ssr. the reading is the lower number on the pid. if you dont do this, the controller will chase temp, and you dont want this when your stillin. you need to set your output to burstfire if your running a standard zerocross ssr. it may be default to 4-20ma, and that will not fire the ssr.

Mule can explain my current controller to you as that is his product.Gr8brewer wrote:How does the speed switch work? Do you have picture?
My spare controller is listed in the classified section.

Re: My pintoshine controler project did not work for me
It is a simple PWM controller with 5 settings 20% 40 60 80 100% power. I think it has a 30-40A SSR in it? Cant remember, i built it a long time ago. It is a simple bullit proof controller. As im sure LW gave it one hell of a test run.

oh... the switch.....
it isnt a pot, it is a multiposition rotary switch. it clicks into the different settings.

Gr8brewer, those images are WAY bigger than they need to be... If you need help reducing the sizes, let me know... Waiting several minutes to open them in actual size is just ridiculous... Enough so to almost cause a person to just go help someone else rather than wait...
While I wait, and wait, do you have a schematic and list of components...??? Is this an actual Pintoshine controller or a bastardized controller based on it...???

Re: My pintoshine controler project did not work for me
I was wondering the same rad. Isnt a pint controller a triac based controller?

Re: My pintoshine controler project did not work for me
yes i was building a triac controler. one of the PID was for reading temp only. the other was to control water for mash temp. the triac is not working for me at all want some other ideas that i can control my element.

Re: My pintoshine controler project did not work for me
Yes, and even though fuzzy, the last image does show the Quadrac, a high power triac, a gum drop condenser, a resistor, and a potentiometer... How everything is wired is what I question...MuleKicker wrote:I was wondering the same rad. Isnt a pint controller a triac based controller?
@Gr8brewer
A 250K 1/2W potentiometer can be used in place of the dimmer pot, for 120V... A 500K pot works better for 240V... You shouldn't need to go higher in rating than 1/2W, but using 1W or 2W won't effect performance, just give added durability...

Re: My pintoshine controler project did not work for me
I built a pintoshine controller and have had no problem with mine.
Have not added any displays, I just used a current clamp on one of the element wires and a voltmeter to calibrate mine. The only issue I had was connecting the voltmeter incorectly. It has to go across the two element wires and not between 1 of them and ground.
Both current and voltage are varied. Also you have to switch it on and then back it off again as it will not trigger on at low power.
This was calibrated for a 3kw element - but it indicates the linearity of the controller

Did you download the circuit diagram and wiring instructions? I found it really easy to build.

ask larry if he is selling it with the plugs. if not, plugs is all you need.

I'm going to give the MuleKicker Phase Angle Controller a whirl. I have everything sourced out except the transformer. Any one have a source for a transformer?

Re: My pintoshine controler project did not work for me
he will need a 24VAC transformer. Less than 1A, only needs to run the SSRMAN board.

Re: My pintoshine controler project did not work for me
I'm a start with the basics kind of guy. . .
assuming that the unit is plugged in and you have power to the plug
have you checked to see if the element is good ????????????????????
Run a simple ohm test your element may be burned out

Would this transformer do the trick?
