If anyone wants to check in from overseas on a "local" source of news reasonably low bandwidth, you could try,
http://www.radionz.co.nz/national" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
http://www.radionz.co.nz/national/programmes/afternoons" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
Felt the last one here in wgtn, not this time however, Kiwi-lembic good to hear your ok and thanks for the on-the-ground info.
This really does make one think about family, priorties, and preparedness, for anything really, any scenario where being self reliant and a bit of medical skill/first aid ability and supplies etc would make a difference. Help from many many countries arriving now, big thanks have to go out to Oz, UK, US, Japan, Taiwan just to mention a few.

Re: Kiwi's are you ok? Earth quake?
we felt the same about your fires and floods... every day there's tragedies and losss in the world, hundreds (here), even thousands (bigger countries) killed and injured on the roads, floods, hurricanes, earthquake in Haiti, war zones, civil unrest, terrorist acts etc, we see it on the news and try to comprehend it all, but it's just that more impacting when it's somewhere we have kinship with and/or closer to home. The resilience and spirit down there is amazing, but for those who've lost more than possessions and property, it will be a long hard road for sure. Yet again a wake up call for us Wellington people, situated on a major fault line, or indeed almost anywhere in the country. Keep safe all, no matter where you are...

It's the four horsemen of the apocalypse charging down upon us... Conditions are spinning out of control everywhere... Political turmoil, weather, natural disasters... It ain't lookin' too pretty...
NZ has been getting more than its fair share recently...

Received this from Tony Ackland - and for anyone who is unaware of him click on parent site above. -
"Thanks for asking, yes my family is from Christchurch, but I'm now in
Brisbane. Family are all fine, but not the happiest - all the repeated
aftershocks are getting on their nerves."

All is okay with me and everyone I know, the western part of town (where I am) seems fairly well off.
My brother and others I know start work again tomorrow. Seems too early to start our life again with so many lives gone or missing.

Re: Kiwi's are you ok? Earth quake?
I think of the hundreds of photos ,,news clippings that are appearing on this nasty disaster ..this one should be in the history pics of N.Z ...
a place i used to go alot the hills above christchurch city where this photo is taken from ..This picture is the eartquake hitting ..the following seconds ..
The cloud of dust you see is the worst hit area in christchurch ..The Christchurch buisness district ..or central christchurch ..where many old heritage buildings now lie flattened ..it is also all area where you are mainly seeing all the pics on the news ..alot of the outer skirts of ch-ch have not been hit as hard as this cloud dusted area....a large % of buisness's in here are now wrecked and ruined and no-one allowed back in till all the bodies retrieved ..if the economy wasnt already pinching many buisness people in here ..this is the icing on the cake for them ,,,the poor barstads..my heart goes out to you guys
and yet another phone call to another mate yesterday whos buisness is in that ball of dust ..tells me his wifes best friends body had just been found in that lot ...R.I P to the many souls so far ..
havin huge probs loading pics on here lately so heres the link

Approaching 150 fatalities and still many missing. And today will bring strong winds that will make life even more miserable - if that's possible - for the folk in chch. After shocks are still occuring causing damaged buildings to collapse. What a bastard of a thing have to live through!!!

Re: Kiwi's are you ok? Earth quake?
Followinw the earthquake in the land of our good friends and trading partners in Japan - forgetting the slaughter of our soldiers in jap POW camps - the earthquake that killed many of our kiwi mates seems to have been forgotten by our 'news' agencies.
Can any kiwis in the forum let me know what's happening in chch. Fatalities? Injuries? Progress in cleaning up? How the folk of chch are coping with the disaster? In fact, anything relating to how the situation is progressing. Thanks in anticipation.

The stuff I can tell you is just some of the fundrasing things that are happen. The All Blacks are playing extra test to raise money. The Foo Figthers are flying in to do a one off concert next weekend.ChristChurch has lost the World Cup games they were hoping to keep these to bring back some normality. Alot of people are out doing goodwill work which is great to see. I think alot of schools opened yesterday. Tell you one thing they are stll working hard.

So can I assume that all the missing folk have been found or identified, MD?

Re: Kiwi's are you ok? Earth quake?
Hi Blanik ..its a bit of a mess the ol town ,,to what i know from friends down there they have all had a guts full .thier nerves are shot even little kids ive seen lately are spooked to shit .... i dont think youll find they have all the mess cleaned up and bodies recovered ..several of my buisness associates in the town cant even get at thier shops and factories as they are in what they call a red zone which is pretty much the buisness and tourist center of town .Its all fenced off .entering there is instant arrest ,.if the economy wasnt already suffering this is going to bleed thru let alone the sad stories of loss of lives from friends .on the spot amputations from being trapped many many friends have completely lost thier homes and living with others etc etc ,,the stories just keep coming ..the blows of mother nature eh ..man she can breath when she feels and shes said to deliver another yet i too am ready-ing for this possible blow ..

Re: Kiwi's are you ok? Earth quake?
Thanks Kiwi, It will take years for chch to 'recover' and the economy problem isn't going to help especially as NZ is such a small nation. What a bastard!!
I'll keep coming back asking this question as we don't hear anything now and I can't get much current/reliable stuff on the net either.
