Re: My still
Hey Waylyn
I borrowed one of those when I first started out and it got me hooked on making hooch.
Any plastics that come into contact with the spirit needs to be removed and replaced with stainless or copper.
You've got it so use it to try an Uncle Jesse Simple Sour Mash (UJSSM)
It should give you a really nice neutral..
Just don't use turbos and be happy with say..... a 25ltr wash and 4kg of sugar with bakers yeast.
Give it a go and then see where that leads you.
Oh ........... and read. .... read..... read......
it's all here you just have to find what you want to do.
Cheers

Re: My still
You need to add at least one metre of packed column underneath that little stumpy CM thingy to be able to make anything close to neutral.
You can make some fine whiskey-ish product with UJSM and DWWG washes though.

Re: My still
What would you suggest, replacing the little column if so are there any plans on here for such a change.
Re: My still
As aqua vitae mentioned, you can vastly improve the overall performance of that rig by adding a packed column extension... Several members have already done so and were happy with the results... And, as I recall, no other modifications were made... However, the addition of a reflux centering ring, placed right about at the top of the column extension, would most likely also improve reflux performance and take off rate...
Re: My still
Are there any plans or links to the packed column extension available ( a breakdown of part needed ) or is there any member you know of that has already done this, with this still that I could pm for advise, would love to get the ball rolling but need to know what I am doing.

Re: My still
Looks like a Boka two reducer design? Nice! It should make a very nice neutral. Tell us about the boiler. Looks like it was welded up from parts.

Re: My still
Very nice Waylan. 23 gallons. Excellent boiler size.
Edit: excuse me, didn't notice the domed top. Around 20 gallons then. Still excellent.

This is grain, which any fool can eat, but for which God intended a more divine means of consumption...

Looks great, doesn't look like you wasted much time in making a change. When you do a run let us know how she works!

Re: My still
Sorry for the delay, the cylinder was made by a company called gledhill (http://www.gledhill.net/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow) but they don't deal with the public direct, you will have to find a local plumbing supplier who has dealings with them and tell them the size you want e.t.c
PS
The still is working a treat now I have a phase angle controller
