Numerous large Walmarts in OR carry feed for hobby farmers. Cracked Corn, Sweetfeed, Chicken Feed, etc. The feed is all USA product that I have seen, mostly Manna Pro.

KS,. way back on page one of this great thread you referred to a 30 gallon wash and using one packet of WD yeast w/AG,.. was that a 2.5 oz packet?,… I thought the ratio was one 2.5oz packet,.. to a 6 gallon wash. Will one packet do a 30 gallon ferment?
Heres why I ask,.. had a bunch of Prestige Vodka Yeast, 2.5 oz packs and followed what I thought were directions for 1 pack to 6 gallons of water. I added 4 of them to this 30 gallon wash. This ferment is just finishing up at a perfect .990 from a start of 1.090
What can I expect from this, seemingly overdose of yeast? Its settling now.
Im getting ready to run a second 30 gallon wash,.. should I just try one packet?
oh yea,.. I used 60 lbs of sugar.
The total volume amount is under a bit from 30 gallons,.. about 26 gallons, had to leave room for foam but there was none from this sugarhead wash.
Anyway what do you think? or anybody,...

There is no less then 15 Wallieworlds around here. None of them have any. LOL Maybe if I went out of the city they would have some. And not all stores stock the same kind of stuff. All depends on the market they cater to. Just a thought so others wouldn't be disappointed to find theirs doesn't carry any.

I'm not worried about it I have 4 feed stores within 10 miles of me. All carry some sort of sweetfeed. Oh and 2 Tractor Supply stores. LOL Kind of funny we need that many and the Wallieworlds haven't tried to take the business from them.

I hope to get me some 15gal fermentors next week and get some going.

You can go either way. IT will not hurt if you overdose with yeast. The more you add, your ferment will just start working quicker and may finish a little sooner. I always overdose mine now. No worry you will be fine.

KS I've read through this tread and I'm going to try it agian (last time I had wrong SF with pellets and it would not clear). My question is you have played with the sugar amount in your wash, what was the best quality likker with what amount of sugar per Gallon? I'm running a 8 gallon 2" reflux still. I have been making UJSSM for acouple months, I found that I get the best flavor by running it twice as a pot still with copper mesh in half my tower and no reflux. What do you recemmend with this SF?

I use 50# to a 30 gallon wash. I do a big wash and then just run it as time permits. This is all I make so I guess it is my favorite combination. you could bump it up to 60 for an even 2 pounds per gallon.

Hoping to get this on tomorrow. Just one quick question, what amount of sweetfeed are people using per 5 l (or whatever volume)? 4 inches in the bottom of a bucket is a bit vague.

Ran my first Sweet feed batch last weekend and I was anxious to taste this stuff that has everyone all excited.

I grabbed a bottle of the white dog hearts last night and poured a couple of fingers on ice and threw in a splash of water.

Wow! Really interesting flavor. Very tasty! I could really taste the oats as the dominating flavor to me. Complex flavor.
Cant wait to see what it tastes like after a little oaking.

I am a Bourbon drinker and love my UJSSM but I think I am going to be a Sweet Feed fan soon.

Hmmmmm.. Might have to taste it again tonight before I get it on oak.

I did not continue the wash but I did save a gallon of backset so I can get a good start next time. Like sour mash, I only see it getting better with more generations.

Thanks K.S. that is about the ratio I use with my UJSSM, so I'll do the same with the SF and run it the same way with detuned reflux twice run. Will let you know how it goes. Thanks again

if you want more alcohol you can go with 2 pounds of sugar to a gallon and be fine with most yeast.

I just started looking around for non-pelleted Sweet Feed and so far what I've found is the following:

Nutrena - Rocky Mountain Sweet Mix – 40 lbs for $10.99
A versatile grain mix of corn, oats, barley and molasses that can be fed to most large farm animals. An economical way to supplement pasture or hay forage, it can be mixed with Cargill Milk Plus Pellets to make a creep feed. HOWEVER, neither bag had a list of actual ingredients on it and the only other info I could find was on the Internet and only for the Rocky Mountain Sweet Mix. So I have no idea if there are any preservatives or the like in it and no one in the store seemed to know. Does anyone here know where I could get further information on these two feeds? Are there any other particular brands that would be as good, better, whatever? I really want to run a batch of this but also want to start out safe and sound.

The Tractor Supply Co. has this. Producer's Pride® All Grain Feed is a wholesome mixture of corn, oats and barley with just a touch of molasses for that sweet "granola" flavor. It is designed as an energy source for mature maintenance or lightly-worked horses, cattle, goats, and sheep on good quality forage and a vitamin/mineral supplement.
This is $12.99 for 50#, no pellets and works very well. Very fast ferment.

This is a long topic but make sure you do searches. Here's what I found when I searched:

Thanks I have read through the entire thread before asking the questions I wrote down that recipe but I still am not sure how much Yeast to use? How much is in a packet? If I purchase bakers yeast yes it comes in packets with enough yeast to make a loaf of bread, is this the packet that is mentioned? I am new to all of this but it would seem for 30 gallons you would need more than one of the small packets? Also just for info I have been reading on this board for over a week now so im not just asking questions because im lazy, I used the search function multiple times to anwser my own questions it just seems like it wouldnt be an issue to ask a question from someone who may know who could give me a straight anwser

Roadrunner, try to buy your baking yeast in bulk at natural food store or in 1 or 2 pound bricks at big box stores or discount grocery outlets. Then you can over pitch your yeast and get a more vigorous ferment without going broke payin for yeast. I use 1 tablespoon per gallon, but you could use even more like double that which is what RAD does or did with the All Bran recipe.

just bought a 50lb bag of producers pride 12% sweet feed from tractor supply open it up and it looks like some of the grain is formed into a pellet with pieces of corn and other grain mixed with molasses but is mostly pellets they don't sell the all grain anymore I am assuming this is the wrong kind if so that was a good way to waste 10.00

As long as the pellets aren't filled with grass and filler (dust, floor sweepings) you might be just fine. Seeing as you already own the bag, might as well give it a try. Throw a few pellets in hot water and see what the results is.

I believe the pellets are some of the grain there is no alfalfa in it I made sure of that if the pellets stay together and don't turn to mush I am good ???

What do you have to lose by trying it other than a bit of sugar... Prepare a small batch and give it a go... Some members have even used up entire bags of sweet feed that were less than ideal mixes...

Been out looking and pricing sweetfeed. average $10 for #50bag. And 5 different suppliers. So I will be getting some real soon. But one place had sweet oats. Basically steam rolled oats and molasses. Question is how do you think that would work out? Would the molasses over power the oats? Or would it blend nicely? I will try it and see eventualy. Run it similar to the sweetfeed recipe. But was looking to see if any one else has tried it. In my head it sounds like something I would really like to try. I'm not big in the harsher corn flavors and thought the oats would make a lighter whiskey. Or rumskey in this case.
