Asking dumb questions
Here's a dumb question for you all that I dont think is in the reading lounge or can be searched for, now bare in mind that I couldnt be bothered searching for an answer or using google to find it.
I've often wondered why newbies that ask a general question get their head kicked in for wanting a simple answer, yet some get on here give the worst possible answers with no such head kicking going on.
So why is it so one sided and why dont we see people getting a flogging for giving crap advise, and according to the rules telling someone you've got the shits because they asked a question is not on either?
Now I'm trying to work out what can I actually ask about a build I'm planning without some wanker wanting to have a go at me?
Regards, Dingo.

Re: Asking dumb questions
I think it has something to do with these old timers having been on here soooooo long,
and having seen/answered/helped on the same questions soooooo many times, that they've
become somewhat burned out. Especially when there are so many places where notices have
been put directing newbies to where they can find their own answers, yet, newbies continue
to ask the questions before becoming familiar with the site, etc.. Something like that ???
Old timers are like Knives, good and sharp when new, but get a little dull when used too much.

It is not the matter, nor, the space between the matter,
but rather, it is that finite point at which the two meet,
that, and only that, is what is significant...........
(Of course, I could be wrong) ..........

Re: Asking dumb questions
Hey Dingo
Just read the Thermometer thread where all this came from.
The original poster didn't add anything as he got the answer needed.
The following pages were just unnecessary...... urine included
Little personal info.
When I first came onto the site in my enthusiasm to get stillin smarts - I posted my still and was shown it's faults.
Was somewhat deflated because I needed even more reading than I had done up until that point.
Some posts are a bit tart for peoples taste but guess what?
You will think twice before posting questions and do your research first.
I am still here, reading and learning.
Yes the replies can be a bit curt, but you will be able to grow quicker and keep the forum less cluttered if you do your own research.
Works for me.
So rather than kicking the long standing forum members for getting uptight about repeating themselves over and over, perhaps we take our lumps and move forward.
What don't kill you, makes you stronger.

Re: Asking dumb questions
I have about 100 questions that I never asked, but that were answered in the 100s of threads on this forum. I've asked a couple of questions over the years, to which I received a wide range of responses to, and taken as a whole, I got the answers that I needed to push my ball forward. This place has helped thousands of us learn more about this great hobby and has helped keep the distilling community safe from the many potential dangers that are also a part of this hobby. Hundreds of people helping each other by sharing their distilling experiences, that's what this place really is. Sure there's mistakes along the way, nobody and nothing is perfect. Mistakes are made everyday all over the damn place, and everyday we all get on with it.
So go ahead and ask your questions about the build you're planning, I'm sure it will work out for you.

Re: Asking dumb questions
My car ran out of $4.00 dollar a gallon gas this morning and I had to walk a half mile to a gas station to get more to find out they charge $20.00 dollars for a one gallon container. When I got back to the car, I found the driver mirror gone. Some ASS HOLE had side swiped the car and drove off. Finally at work, the boss is pissed because he forgot to back up his computer and now we need to pay, in abuse, for his stupidity. At lunch, they wanted to charge me more for my ice tea for the cockroach swimming in it. Something to do with more protein.. When I finally got home, my spouses daughter tells me she is pregnant and, hell, she just turned 13. Of course, the spouse is pissed and for some reason, the daughter being pregnant is my fault because I don't screen her boyfriends better. I am eating a TV dinner. The spouse is to upset to cook. The daughter is pissed at us for we're not happy about an up comming baby. I have cancer I haven't told anyone about, cause there are enough problems floating around. The doctor told me I was supose to be dead last month, but with this pain I wish I was. I'm at the only place that leaves me a moment of peace and I read your post about whatever, that was just answered below your post in another and another and another, and I 'm suposed to remain sane and civil?
Well, excuse me for having a bad day and telling you how lazy/ stupid you are because, you refuse to do some reading and want all the answers handed to you on a silver platter.
As for giving crappy advice. What I thought was right or what I have been doing and passing along. I have had shoved up my a** by other members. I have been told to f*** off and die by several. Doing my best.

Thank God all the above didn't happen in one day. If it had I wouldn't be typing about it. I'd have shot myself instead.
For all you fine folks, whom refuse to read. Instead of asking "The Stupid Question". Coach "The Stupid Question" into a story about your problem or lack of knowledge. Instead of being told what a dumb f*** you are, you'll probably get ten answers on what or how to solve your problem.

I dont need your help, never did! but I dont need your bullshit either
But then why would I listen to you when you cant answer a question
I know your a gun stiller that knows it all, but you seem to have trouble sharing what you know, maybe it is time you go on an extended holiday if you cant talk without being a wanker
My questions after many years of pot stilling are leading me towards building a VM column, I've got most of what I need to know sussed out but couldnt be bothered asking if a simple pot stiller is going to give me shit.
Regards, Dingo.

Re: Asking dumb questions
No venom!
Just want to ask a couple of basic questions about building a VM column, I've searched, read till my eyes bleed and the thing that stands out before I find answers is venom from the experienced, and a lot of other dribble I couldnt be bothered reading that has nothing to do with the search words I enter.
But if I'm just gunna cop the old fuck off and read attitude I wont bother, as much as I would like to see this change I'm understanding of the fact it wont.
So I'll just go ahead and fuck it up, work out what's wrong and tell others to go do the same because i'm a prick that dont like sharing

Dingo, there's a saying for whiners like you... Suck it up, ButterCup...
Now, bite your tongue, and your fingers, and refrain from further comments here... It should be obvious that your views are not shared with the general membership and your lashing out is not appreciated... None of us is holding you a hostage here so feel free to leave if you don't enjoy our company and advice...
This topic shall remain open, at least for now, so your peers can post replies but it's probably in your best interest to just sit back and read rather than post further in this topic unless you intend to eat some crow regarding previous posts...

I know Blanik doesn't need me to defend him...
but jeez, Take it easy Dingo. Blanikdog is a fine fellow. Well liked and respected around here. If you have a problem with him, then perhaps you should check yourself first.
I do hear what your are saying. This place has a funny vibe that way. It always has... I think it comes with the territory...
I'm guilty of jumping on people, but usually its not novices, I do like to give Rad hell sometimes...
So whats your question anyway? So far you come across as a guy in the bar that gets accidentally bumped into and then wants to square off in the parking lot... I'd like to see more posts from Dingo, the potstiller. Not Dingo the victim...

Don't know what a whinger is, but unless you get on with it and ask a serious question then you are just coming across as a troll. Have you posted up your VM thoughts yet?

Funny, I had just been thinking that some of our mentors and old farts have been down right sweet to newbies lately. (Has the boss been handing out Valium?)
He is wrong. You guys will dish out a flogging for bad advice faster then dumb questions.
The worst spanking I got was for handing out poor advice. I didnt like it but I had it coming. (thank you Tater)
I am more careful about the words I choose because of it.

Re: Asking dumb questions
I have to side with Dingo on this one. Part of the problem is that the main site is full of information that contradicts the information in the forum. Then you search the forum and it's filled with too much information and much of it not relevent to your question.
Old timers don't want to spoon feed? Great, don't post or just point them in the right direction and leave it at that. If someone doesn't mind giving a more detailed explanation then let them have at it.
Funny how Dingo asking for people to be polite is called a troll but old timers giving new members all kinds of grief isn't seen as a problem.
ETA: I was talking about the old main site. Haven't really gone through the new layout and don't know if/what changes were made.

Re: Asking dumb questions
Dingo came here spoiling for a fight. He was provocative from the very beginning. I can't tell if he is a legit poster asking (finally) a serious question or just someone stirring up some shit. This forum has a history of people stirring it up for fun.
I also think that folks in general have had good manners lately. I haven't seen too many instances of old timers giving newbies all kinds of grief. I get the frustration of read read read. But sometimes its a good answer.

Re: Asking dumb questions
Sometimes we tell members what they need to hear, which is not always what they want to hear... Therein lies the difference of opinions that we get from those who don't like what they hear... But, of course, they are actually reading and not hearing so there may be times when the lack of inflection contributes to the problem... I type it one way and you read it another... Kinda hard to know what inflection was intended...
As a case in point that I use often... Three little words... They can have different meanings based on punctuation and inflection... Those three words are "please", "don't", and "stop"... Play with those three little words and you'll see what I mean...

I will add that a lot of it is out of date, some of it maybe wrong, and a lot of the good stuff can only be understood after you already understand it. I know, I know. It is owned by someone else, and we can't do anything about it, but at least it should stop being referred to as the "Bible".
rad just made a very good point. Here is another example of how even pausing between words can make a world of difference. "What's that in the road a head?" "What's that in the road ahead?"

Re: Asking dumb questions
OK, first off, the Parent Site, i'll meet you half way here. The parent site was put together years ago and is still a valuable resource in its own right. The theory and calculational sections are second to none on the web IMO. Agreed, some of the info within the PS is in stark contrast to modern disciplines now practised within the boards of HD and we are striving behind the curtain atm to update the parent site and bring it into line with modern methods pertaining to our hobby, using modern technology that was just not available when the site was first constructed and it is a mammoth task. It really does'nt matter how much we polish it when we think its ready go live, there will always be something not quite correct or, not needed or, why has this not been included. ect, ect...Bagasso wrote:I have to side with Dingo on this one. On the subject of spoonfeeding new members... We recently had a new member here on HD start a new thread on building a simple pot-still that I frequently visit. It was relevant from his post that he had read through some of the parent site, the reading lounge and the boards pertaining to his given system. The terminology he used was so different from his first posts and his understanding of the materials and safety features associated to his chosen design, in some pm's I got from him, were of a beginner who had done some homework. Not a lot of reading, but had at least tried to understand and had some questions that needed some clearing up. I helped him along and now he's in the middle of his build.
Like most of the Gurus, Mods, Mentors and members here on HD, I regularly get about 2 posts everyday that require some clarification and help. I try and always give them accurate information on their given topic, avoiding the, I think, well maybe, try and see, ect, ect; If I cant give them an accurate answer to what their asking, (were only human), I always manage to point them in the correct manner, to the correct information... I do this for 2 reasons. Like most, HD is very special to me. It took me from a simple pot stiller to a distiller who could take a step back from his hobby and really see what was possible with just a few modifications. But a lot of reading, note-taking and discussion lay before me and so, my journey to becoming a hobbyist who could produce top notch shine, efficiently and safely had begun. I took some roastings along the way from various members, but if I had not taken the roastings and been led to the potty, I would not be where I am today in my hobby... The guy's roasting me are now friends, friends I may never get to meet, but friends and colleagues I hold dear, none the less...
IMO, the membership of HD must be seen to be in control of what there members are producing. There are a lot of great stillers and artizans here on the boards that distill efficiently and more importantly, safely. They came from very humble beginnings and they have the bruises to prove it..
On a final note: Blanikdog is a seasoned pot-stiller and fellow member and friend, what he does not know about pot-stillin, IMO, is not worth knowing. He has a system that works for him a system that has worked for various stillers who have a similar environment. He has been a truss to HD over the years, giving his knowledge freely over and over and over again and still does... Yet over the past few weeks I've seen him take a volley of crap from relatively new members. I would not be the friend I am if I just sat back and watched it happen. IMO, Dingo was at the edge of a high diving board and had not checked his water level.
Dont need this crap on HD...
This post is way too long already... I think thats how Trolls work...
EDIT:Got your post in before me Bert, hope you doing well...S.
