Possible to seal corn cob corks?

Little or nothing to do with distillation.

Possible to seal corn cob corks?

Post by luther-blissett »

Hey,

Ive just made a whole bunch of corn cob corks. I realize that if I leave them as is they will get inevitably get drink on them, and then all the hard work drying them out would be for nothing. Anyone have any ideas of how one could seal them that would be wouldnt taint/contaminate the contents? If one dipped the bottom of the cork in wax i think the wax would break off into the drink when pushing it in.

thank you

How about a quick dip in bees wax then scrape or wipe off surface excess while still hot. Or us cotton fabric as a barrier between glass and cork. What I'm really thinking is do you need anything at all.

alcohol will deteriorate wax,most used corncobs as they had nothing else.
cobs are not efficient as corks,but that can be a good thing as they will
let the contents breath.

Ah alright. thank you for the info though I found next to nothing on corncob corks on the internet. I also cant easily find corks to buy as well as the fact I like doing things the old way. I think as highish proof alcohol preserves it may be OK for the corncob corks to get a bit on them every now and again, cant see that making them rot.

Corncobs were used years ago because they were always around and free... They kept the bugs out of the hooch jugs and let the jugs breathe... They were never intended to provide a perfect seal... Think of them as the old time equivalent of coffee filters... :thumbup:

Yeah. I read in one thread here someone said 'liquor doesnt age in corncob corked bottles'. But I believe you more I think, it seems natural that they would let a bit of gas in/out.

Corn cobs have a core which is porus cellulose which allows breathing... And the outer layer of the cob can also allow some breathing if it isn't jammed in overly tight...

Corn cobs are very versatile... I've used them to plug knot holes in shed walls when the knots fell out, as a temporary lawn mower gas cap, and even combined with corn husks for cabin mattress fill, just to name a few ingenuitive uses... Not to mention corn cob pipes for smoking corn silk back in the day...

ok. Yeah I actually planned on making a corncob pipe, but realized after shaving the cobs they werent going to be wide enough to allow for a proper sized bowl so I ended up making one out of firewood instead.
