Are there a lot of new members?
Goodness. Doesn’t it seem like there is a lot of new members? Some are posting like crazy. High post counts without saying much of value. Sticking their nose everywhere. God, I hope I didn’t look like that. (maybe I still do) Am I getting snotty or am I just understanding what you veteran guys think and deal with? Damn.I have not been here that long myself. Reminds me to shut up unless I have value to add. Okay, after this post.
Is this just the change of season? Does membership run in cycles? Participation change with seasons? Do we get more southern hemisphere participation in July?

Re: Are there a lot of new members?
It kinda ebbs and flows, every time the history TV thing plays a rerun I guess we get a membership spike.
I don't pay attention to post count, just because a guys title is, "master luv gun super distiller" doesn't make it so.
As far as content, if I get a good chuckle it's a good post. If it's a new post about an old topic well sometimes a new perspective is a good thing. A little here and a little there, the next thing you know we have lwtcs or ozone doing something so far out of the box it make a guy think that hey, maybe us hobby guys know a thing or two.
Hell 3/4 of my posts are mindless bull crap, but they're funny or at least I like to think so.
Seems like this forum is half about entertainment and half about serious distilling...... if it weren't for a little bit of humor, this place would read like a text book.

It's part of your maturation process. By understanding more you come to recognize where it is your not. I agree 100% with Rubber Duck on this one. We're here to help folks get started but fully intend to have a bit of fun along the way.mash rookie wrote: Am I getting snotty or am I just understanding what you veteran guys think and deal with? +1 Rubber Duck, I enjoy reading all posts, both the serious ones and the funny, hell, most of the funny ones are serious and the serious ones are funny.

I have to agree that I love the humor and the lighter side of things. You got some heads on oak yet RD? And Hell yes, LWTCS, Ozone, Myles and others are inspiring. They challenge my thinking and charge my creative juices. I cant dissagree that different perspective is a good thing as well.As far as content, if I get a good chuckle it's a good post. Maybe I got out of the wrong side of the bed this morning. Didnt mean to sound bitchy. There are a lot of new faces. The guys that have been around for awhile probably have seen hundreds come and go. Welcome aboard all.

Re: Are there a lot of new members?
It's interesting to note that of the 9551 members, 7952 of them have less than ten posts.
4565 of the 9551 members have zero posts.
It seems like most members have about a six month run, then they disappear.
It's also interesting to note how quickly some newbies become experts, some give out spot on information, others.... not so much...
Rad is the top poster (not to say I'd like a poster of Rad) with 8514 posts.
Bull.

Re: Are there a lot of new members?
Gotta agree with RD and other posters... 6 months is an average time for new users to come up to speed and are capable of doing an excellent batch on their own. The other 6 month experts are, well, maybe not. I dont bother much with post count as well, the subject matter within the post is what i'm after.

Re: Are there a lot of new members?
Mash Rookie, With so much experience on this site, it's tough for someone just learning to add "something of value", so a guy has to get involved in some way.
I do get a kick out of reading some of the new member posts though, (done much more reading than posting). I almost know what Rads responce will be before he even hits the keyboard.
You haven't been here so long that you've forgoten what it's like to be just breaking into the hobby, have you ?
Thanks for the opportunity to get my post count up.

LOL. I still have the bruises from pissing matches with rad. I have learned to view him as our Chihuahua guarding the front door. He may bother you, but you still will get your foot bit off if you mess with him. Dont go there!
I love you all. Welcome to the wonderful world of distilling. Maybe someday I will be worthy to be someones mentor.

Re: Are there a lot of new members?
Yep... Been there and done that - well, most of that...
But I've been way too busy to do more than stay up on reading posts for the past two days and don't think I've even posted till now... Trying to get a project out the door so all of my keystrokes have been consumed by writing code... When a deadline isn't approaching like a bullet train I have more time to post, do research, and even partake in the hobby... But I never skip reading every post...
Those shows on The History Channel provide us with waves of new registrations every time they do another round of broadcasts... And the general membership doesn't see how many bogus registration attempts that are bogus spam... Husker tries to keep up on the latest and greatest tweaks to phpBB to eliminate a vast majority of those attempts... But just when you feel like you're ahead of the rat race, along comes faster rats...

Re: Are there a lot of new members?
I wonder how many come here and find out that hobby stilling is alot of work, or find out that it's not just about cheap booze, and just lose interest, never to be heard from again???

A.D.D. and HD don't go together. This hobby takes time and dedication to learn and do it right and safe.

Look at the count (9000+) vs the count of regulars (< 1000). There's your answer.
