What's an iPod...???  :?

That'd be like surfing the site using a Kindle... 8)

You gotta use the right tool for the job... :P

I work with computers every day but am feeling more and more technologically challenged every day... I barely know how to use my simple cell phone and still only have it for absolute emergencies so it is off 99.999% of the time... I have no need for a GPS to get me from point A to point B yet have one for recording the hikes we take as well as marking waypoints of interest... I have never texted... Still don't see the fascination of MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, or any of the other social networking sites... But I digress...

Don't get your hopes up, adanac58...

I saw a kindle running Ubuntu Linux the other day and I have to say...it was pretty damn cool....

Anyone wishing for an Apple app should hold their breath...I have dealt with Apple on numerous occasions.

Facist doesnt even begin to cover it...;)

I think anyone can make an apple application , it's all about getting permission from uncle Jesse and finding someone with an apple computer that is willing to develop an app for free . And to answer your question iPod is a new wave of mp3 player . It has a touch screen it can take pictures and play games on it , you can surf the web ( I'm on my iPod now) and many other things

There does not have to be any app. You simply have to make the site detect the iphone/ipod, and apply a different style to it. This site uses phpbb, which can do this.

Check this thread: http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... &t=1304135" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

Sites can identify the browser being used, and modify themselves accordingly. iphone enabled sites are really nice to browse through, I wish this site had that feature.

Ya, so do I. I'm just saying it would be nice to have a mobile formatted forum. Does this site have an android theme as well?

Its not apple, or whoever made your phone. Its the size of the browser. There are forum themes that suit mobile browsers better than the default. I've been reading this site for several years on an iphone. No reason to turn this into a rant on your favorite mobile device. The internet is a place that can be made nicer for mobile users, if admins take a bit of time to optimize for ALL browsers that may hit their site. Unless your android has a 15 inch monitor?

I guess I don't understand what you're wanting. I'm not too familiar with much of this technology. I just know I can read and post from my phone. My comment about apple has more to do with itunes than phones... I couldn't care less about a phone debate... They are all amazing in my book

If you would, How does a mobile format change things?

It make the fonts bigger, and reorganizes the look so its easier to use on such a small screen.

Like when you browse wikipedia on a mobile device versus a pc, its formatted a bit differently and much easier to use. No zooming, panning, etc.

Anyway, just an idea.

So is that what "there's an app for that" mean? You need an "app" because it doesn't do it out of the box?

An "App" is an application written to perform a specific task... "App's" have little to nothing to do with surfing the web... So browsing these forums is more dependent on a devices browser client and the page styling presented to that browser client than what the term "App" implies... Now, a Sugar Calculator App or a US to Metric conversion App would be true examples... They run based on the operating system of the device more so than from within the devices browser client... And, for those who may not be aware, a browser client is the program that actively displays internet content, like Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari, etc...

I know, Rad, that's what I tried to imply with my sarcastic question. I use an "app" called Firefox to post to this forum. If somebody needs a specialized "app" for that, then presumably they either don't have a browser or their browser is inadequate. If such basic tools as browsers are inadequate on iSomethings, then I am not surprised they need an "app" for everything.

But that's off-topic. Hang, on, we *are* in the off-topic section :-)

As I stated above, iphones HAVE a browser. It works great. Pretty much all phones have a browser these days.

Pretty much all phones ALSO have a less than 4" screen on them. Take whatever current monitor you use with firefox, and shrink it down to 4". Now, do you think that a standard web browser will present a nice interface for the forum on a 4" screen?

If the site detects the browser, and modifies its look accordingly, it makes it a lot easier to manipulate the site from such a small screen. I can view any standard web site on my iphone. Its just that some are painfully not designed for such a small device. Many many sites are catching up with mobile users and being nice to their browsers.

There's no need for a dedicated app. Just a dedicated theme on the server side for mobile users of all devices, this has nothing to do with iphones, ipods, androids, whatever. It has to do with tiny screens and big sites.

Of course its easier to just bash ithings because... uh, I guess because its fun? I dunno, its just a phone, with the same issues and problems all tiny computers have. Mainly their size. Then again its highly convenient to have a small computer in my pocket that does all sorts of things, like browse the net, run applications, what have you.

"There's an app for that" applies to every single computer ever made. Otherwise they just sit there.

yeah you can go on home distller forum on the ipod but some of the words get crunched together making them un legible and the safari browser sucks ! the homebrew forum has an application rather than just going on it through safari and let me tell you the application is 10x better , i just gotta open the app go to the thread i want and post , my ipod has a camera attached to it so i can post pictures directly to the forum ( no trouble with taking out memory sticks and waiting for it to load on your computer .. ) i wish home distiller had an app like that where i could directly post pictures from my ipod touch
