240VAC Triac Controller

Post by thebigvoodoo »

The Preliminaries: I've a background in physics, and I've picked up a book on power electronics. I'm still making my way through the process of brushing up on my old knowledge and learning new and interesting details about circuits.

The Project: My intention is to build a 240VAC Triac controller from scratch. The power controller will be hooked up to a 5500W stainless steel water heating element that will be fitted into the bottom of a 100L pot.

The Question: I was wondering if anybody had any insight, advice, or would care to provide me with a suitable circuit diagram for my purposes? Ultimately, I will be building it to my own standards and specifications (obviously with reference to, and approval by, someone who has experience in the matter), but it would be nice to have a touchstone from which to begin.

Thanks in advance.

Umm... Haven't you searched these forums...??? There are multiple topics covering the building of several designs... Start out in the New Distillers Reading Lounge because there is an overview topic there with links to just about every other topic if you're too lazy to look for them...

but i can save you 40 pages of reading, just buy a PSR-25 and pot from RS online by the time you read the 40 pages you could have had it delivered and made one....

have fun

Maheel, I found the PSR-25, but what do you mean by "pot"?

"pot" potentiometer (A variable resistor with 3 connections)
