Condenser for 3" LM

Post by 'SideWinder' »

Hi,

So I've had the Air Still for quite some time and been happy with the results. Been reading many threads and trying different recipes. Now it is time to build myself a LM.

I'm thinking I'll go with a 3" diameter 60" height LM. Thought If i'm building one I might as well build something decent from the start.

I've got a 50L keg and 2200watt heating element already. I will source the copper pipes now, my mate is a aircon mechanic so should be able to hook me up.

I'm not exacly sure about the condenser, It will be continuous double coil. How long should I make the condenser? and what size tube would be best suited? I've read Hooks tutorial and he's mentioned a 6" long 1/4" tube for a 2" column. He's also mentioned I can go up to 8" without having back pressure. The column height doesn't affect the condenser size (does it?), Hook mentions the 6" condenser comfortably handles 2400w of water steam.

So if I make a 6-8" it will be fine? bigger is better tho right? is there a ideal diameter tube I should use? 1/4"?

If I was making a 2" I'd go 8" length and 1/4" tube. But because it's a 3"/60" column I'm not sure If I need a bigger condenser to suit.

Give my Condenser Coil Calculator a try... It can calculate both single and double helix condenser tubing requirements... Grab my Helpful Distillation Related Calculators file while you're there as well... These are web page files that you can run from your PC...
