Uses for a 5 Gallon tall Sanke Keg

In our view 30 gallons and under is considered hobby size. Do not bring anything larger than this to our site.

They are of absolutely no use at all. Send it to me and I will properly destroy it for you.

I am actually going to cut one up to make a distilling'ish HERMS system. No need to heat the full 15.5 gallons in the HLT when you don't sparge. Why not make a 5 gallon HLT instead?

That would be my dream boiler... Not too big and not too small... Just right... I'd slap a heating element in that and be happier than a pig in shit...

I'm procrastinating, ,,,,,,but ima chop one up along with one of those middle of the road sized European kegs and make a boiler with two fully intergrated concentric thumpers. Complete with all the service ports ...................one of these days.

Thanks for the ideas, I had never even heard of a HERMS rig before. the benefit of a HERMS or a RIMS system is using the spent wash to heat the incoming new wash? the thumper is a good idea and using it for gins isnt a bad idea either!

AHHHHH while im writing this the cold water circulating pump I was using for a 5 gallon pear/apple eau de vie just brunt out on me, the backup (which i had never tested) is damaged too!!!

I would do very little to it except take out the spear and convert it into a thumper. The concentric in and out design to fit the single keg connector works well.
Personally I would fit a 3/4" overflow, but that is only because I can easily get the compression type bulkhead connectors that will fit through the hole when you have taken the spear out.

To clarify,,,Myles is referring to the plumbing when he says concentric.
And I was referring to the boilers. As a series or a concentric array of boilers. The primary and another two parasitic.

Yeah, I got one of these and was thinking about putting two 1500 watt heaters in it. The only thing I do not like about it is the narrow foot print it has. Looks easy to tip over!

Easy to make a wider supporting frame, with a band around the keg maybe a third of the way from the bottom to hold it rigid.

When i was running my triclamp potstill rig, i would strip from my big keg into a 5 gallon keg like you posted. Then swap the potstill head to the 5 gal place on burner and keep right on running with the spirit run.

And if you insulated the smaller keg while filling it (wrap it in a couple of blankets?) you would save even more time and energy on the spirit run...
