I contacted the local animal produce stores for Molasses. When asked the question whether thier molasses was preservative free, unsulfered etc, they were not sure.
Is there anyway of easily telling what you have? Look, taste, smell, consistancy? Does it produce funny smells during a ferment?

They mist get it from some where. Ask if they have a MSDS on it? Who do they purchase it from? A little detective work will do a long way. Trust me , it will be worth it in the end.

If it's prepackaged then the answers to those questions should be clearing stated on the container... If they want to make a sale, they'll look without you having to make the trip to do so yourself...

If you go to the top of the "Sugar" thread list there is a good write up by Tater about Molasses that I just got finished reading. Might help

If you look like food, don't be surprised when you get eaten.
