Damn you Larry. Every video you do puts more ideas in my head. Love the skylight by the way. You should just box it in with a little mud and tape and finish it off with a little spray texture. It would make a nice conversation piece.

Skylight check.

Good work Larry.

I'm going to build a cheap Steadicam for that Flip camera. It should be easy and will help improve the videos a bit.

Just to add one point - we just cross-checked Larry's readings against my alcoholometer. My measurement of his aggregate run was right at 94 at 26.4C. His was reading a little less than mine. We don't know whose reading is the most accurate.

His rum smelled superb!

Great vids Larry, BTW what was the temperature of the distillate? that could possibly explain the difference in proof.

It became quite clear early on that my thermometer was crap. AKAAB came over after the run was completed with his alchometer and a digital thermo...

Achieving what I perceived to be 95 late into the run (after much fiddling),,,,,speaks to the validity of my original assertion.

Water flow to my dephleg was an issue as my clear water lines where very much collapsed. Also while cleaning up and knocking the rig down,I was dragging the waterer supply hose back out of my garage and noticed that there was a pretty good kink in the hose...
I really wanted to hit a home run with my collection speed. That for me,, is what I find most interesting about getting the high ABV. And hopefully with the help of some of the math people (Loneswinger's calculator), we can learn more about how to grow and stabilize the buffer zone needed to protect High abv at pot still speeds

No excuses however. My agreement was that I would collect 95 through out. And since I did not,,,,I am compelled to announce that I apologize to the forum (s) for "blowing smoke".
I will also say that 95 is very doable. Perhaps more reflux time and some higher quality cooling lines?
And at this point, for the really smart people that may continue to dispute this concept and even dispute that this type of likker stacking is possible,,,,,,Then I say that you have missed the boat..... 95 through out the duration with a 4-6 plate system is very much coming,,,,,from a lot of hobbyists.

Many thanks to the folks that offer'd me encouragement and my apologies to those people that were expecting more. I wish I coulda knocked it out of the park.

94-95? BFD. I thought you did hit it out of the park! Thank you for taking the time and effort to do the vids.

Larry I cut and pasted all of your YouTubes into one word document with each series numbered for a quick link reference.
Put it together like a movie Bushman and I will bring the popcorn! Moonshine, popcorn and Larry videos! :)

I'm going to have to agree with PP on this one. At that rate, way to go.Thanks a ton for all the videos and time LW. They are a big help and a great watch for me, newer to the forum and hobby. Gives me something to work towards.

I think it's time the Flat Earth society finally conceed that the Earth is Round. Books and charts are just theory, and practice beats theory hands down, congratulations in showing that 95ABV can be acheived.

A couple questions for you LWTCS.
What exactly were you trying to prove with these videos?
I'm assuming and output of 95% or greater with a take off rate of X amount?
Was it that it can be done with a thump tower? Or just your still?
Did the amount of redistillation points ie thumpers or bubble plates have something to do with it? Like I can do it with my 4 thumper tower?
Did size of columns have anything to do with it?
I think I'm on the same page as your thinking of theory of why it works.
I'm just trying to get some numbers to shoot for. To try something along the same lines. That may or may not help with this.
Can you give me a rate of take off your still is putting out? Or a number to shoot for?

its got me thinking really hard about this. And I have some ideas I would like to try. It will be a slow process. But I will give it a go.

Hopefully I won't have to cut a skylight. We will see?

Giving these numbers out to the forum may give others something to shoot for?

Only that achieving 95 is possible with my rig.
Prairiepiss wrote:Was it that it can be done with a thump tower? Or just your still?
I just feel that based on my experience with all my pieces, that the large/over sized bottom plate can be a tool used to squeeze that last percentage point.....It is true that at present,,,, the distance from 90 to 94 is shorter than the distance from 94 to 95
Prairiepiss wrote:Did size of columns have anything to do with it?
Diameter or height? My actual column starts at 2" and reduces to 1.5 after the big thumper. The 4 is merely used as the little boiler chambers...Just not sure about how much the smaller diameter impacts performance PP...

Thats the kind of stuff I was hoping that Harry, Mike Nixon and Pint-o-shine (and others) could shed some light on.
Prairiepiss wrote:Can you give me a rate of take off your still is putting out? Or a number to shoot for?
I did take a few notes early on...But my likker makin is getting better and those notes would likely not apply at this point.. All I can say is I want it to piss like a pot still....That is the entire point...Tooth pic/pencil lead sized stream.... That to me is the tell tail bench mark that should stay,,,,,,at least visually constant. All other adjustment should be adjusted according to this type of out put....Those are my goals any way.
Once I get a thermometer thats worth a darn,,,maybe I can be more precise with a response about adjustments.

My goal was not to make 95 as such. But the ability to do so or not,,,, is what I believe makes for a still that is worthy of a life time of use. Its kinda like a passin gear on a big lazy V8....Can cruz along sorta restrained and untaxed...or can haul ass unrestrained and be nothing more than a good stretch of the limbs......Know what I mean?

Reducing the column size accounts for what would otherwise be reduced vapor speed further up the thumper stack... Gradual reduction of thumper chamber volumes is also a consideration to be taken into account... The more vapor that gets condensed the slower the vapor speed, because there is less, and the smaller the amount of vapor to be acted upon - hence smaller thumper chambers are required...
