Hello from the midwest!
Just taking a moment to say hello to all ... Some background info on me-> Been in building construction for 20 years, mostly commercial stuff. Always wanted to make my own spirits, but information was hard to come by in my area, upper midwest U.S. Then I found this site! Wow! long story short, I have a pile of copper in the shop, a stainless boiler and will be starting my 2" Boka this weekend. Also putting together a pot still head for stripping runs. Finished the Liebig last night. will put up some pics in the build section soon.

HI!
planning on using any local corn in your spirits? I love harvest around here! I can usually scoop 75-100# of grains off the road from truck spills. Makes for some fun brewing and distilling. Local is the way to go if you can!

Well, as far as type of spirits goes,I guess in my mind (if i can ever catch up to it) I have an affliction for rum. Good old fashioned pirate brew! The plan is to make a bunch and then age it in some toasted casks, and hopefully come out with some reallllly nice sipping rum. Im not expecting my first batch to be there, but half the fun is gonna be testing the mix til I get it just right! The other half the fun is building the still! and the next one, and the next one! the liebig was a piece of cake, and kinda a warm up...tonight we start on the main condenser for the Boka. Gonna be a double wrap with a 1/2" coldfinger. fabbing up a winder on the bench as we speak! I'd love to see some of your best rum recipe's if you'all are willing to share!

Re: Hello from the midwest!
There are a few good ones in the tried and true recipe section. That will get you started on the right foot.
Boka is gona make a light rum. What made you go with a boka over a pot still for rum?

Re: Hello from the midwest!
Well my Boka is gonna be "modular" for just such a problem. the packed column will be removable from the boiler, and be able to be replaced with a potstill head and column. The main reason for the Boka was simply for the ability to make "purer" spirits when I get tired of rum or get an itch i need to scratch!

Re: Hello from the midwest!
Sounds like a good plan. Just checking you never know. Seen it many times with bad information. But sounds like you've done some homework.
So are you going full on funk with a dunder pit? Or wana start out simple? Then get your funk on later?

Scratch that....SINGLE wrap with a cold finger...I'm not a plumber, but there is something to be said as far as experience wrapping condensers.

Re: Hello from the midwest!
Sounds intriguing...will take more research for sure..but first thought is it will have to wait/be developed as i go since it requires some sort of used material from the boil. thanks for the heads up though!

If you want to try a double wrap in the future here is a good link:

Wasn't sure how you were going to do a double wrap with a coldfinger as stated in an earlier post!

Re: Hello from the midwest!
I did read this thread and have done something similar as far as the "winder" but I set the height between the winder pipe and bench just slightly more than th OD of my copper (3/8) and wound the copper into that space allowing the benchtop to do most of the work bending. all I had to do was keep tension on copper and guide it for spacing of the wraps. I did fill my copper with salt and had no flattening of the tube at all.Bushman wrote:If you want to try a double wrap in the future here is a good link:

Re: Hello from the midwest!
Did he really just spell "liebig" correctly in his first post on HD? That puts you in the front of the pack. Can't wait to see your finished still, something tells me you're one of those naturals.
