Re: hydrometer
Hi likkerupfront, what you have there is your alcometer that checks your proof and or % now you need a hydrometer, that will read your sugar content in your wash or SG. OMD

You might want to consider spending the extra $$ for a good pyrex test cylinder. I started out with the cheap one and it cracked after a minor bump. Not a big deal except for the little glass shards all over the place ... and the inconvenience of not having a test cylinder. The borosilicate glass cylinders are much more forgiving and typically wont produce all those little shards when they break/crack -- which is great feature if you're clumsy like me.

Re: hydrometer
Well sure glad yall are discussing this topic cuz I just went and bought one of them hooch checker gizmos. I of course bought the accompanying plastic test tube. When I got it home I was scared to use the test tube since yall nag about plastic so much:) Thanks for the heads up..by the way..and also for all our Distinguished Mentors who keep us Newbies straight. Anyway I just decided to drop it into a quart jar of essential liquid and it hit bottom with a clink. I think that means it purty potent..lol.

Well ok I checked with the moonshine poleece today and he say no longer than it takes to take a reading the high test hooch is not going to leach out odd stuff from the plastic test tube. Cant believe yall been fibbing all this time. Color me a bit disillusioned.

Who is the moonshiner poleece? And has this person read the at least 2 threads around here where members have had them crack after putting high ABV alcohol in them? Oh really? I'm not a total synthetic natiz but I'll tell you what happened tome this week. I've been gone for 6 months and I left a gallon of fors in a milk jug on my work bench. I came back and the fors are mostly gone and there is a hole in the jug.bigwheel wrote:Well ok I checked with the moonshine poleece today and he say no longer than it takes to take a reading the high test hooch is not going to leach out odd stuff from the plastic test tube. You want to have some fun? Go heat up a quart of 75% to 160f and dip that tube in it, see what happens.

Know yall wasn't fibbing. I meant to put a smiley on that part. Just a difference of opinion on the efficacy of the plastic test tubes for short duration testing. Havent used it yet and may not. Noticed the Warden running around with a tall skinny glass flower vase the other day. Might take that away from her. Thanks for the input.Prairiepiss wrote:Who is the moonshiner poleece? Re: hydrometer
I think I paid $6 for my glass test jar at the local HB shop. It's not like they are expensive or nothing. What $2 more then the plastic ones.
The plastic ones will work good for fermenting. Just not after its been distilled.

Re: hydrometer
Sorry to hear about the milk carton mishap. I will put that at the top of the "not to do" list. Thanks. Hadn't really planned on plastic jugs for storage. Thats apparently why I have been saving the 1/2 gal glass Ezra Brooks jugs.rubber duck wrote:Oh really? I'm not a total synthetic natiz but I'll tell you what happened tome this week. Well I would have sprung for the glass test tube but didnt see any at my HB place. All he had was plastic. What do you think of the tall skinny glass flower vases?

Well I sure appreciate your kind offer to remove me from the membership rolls but really think I could handle that chore myself if I wanted. Will confess to being native Texan. I specialize in poking eyes and pushing legs..yanking chains etc. Sometimes ill tempered yankees from Noo Yawk do my appreciate my talents..but usually wind up getting along with them fine after we have acclimatized ourselves to one another. You will grow to love me..I have a feeling:)rad14701 wrote:bigwheel, just say the word and we'll remove your account if you don't believe what you read here and want to question experience...
