Before I even tasted it I could tell what was wrong with it, and tasting just confirmed it.
Heads. And lots of 'em.
Could not drink more than 3-4 mouthfuls. Just tasted like paint stripper to me.

My friend said the same, and thinks he wasted his money. I agree. He does not know I still. But I am gonna take him some of mine and see what he thinks. (I won't tell him I made it until after he has tried it).
Apparently it won gold ('Best in Class') at the 2009 International Wine & Spirits Awards.

No wonder I only drank commercial vodka and gin before I started making my own spirits.
Only decent commercial rum I have tried so far is triple stilled Bundy. Actually quite nice and smooth.
So the obvious lesson is: Make your own. (But you all know that already.
