What will it take to run this car on 100% ethanol? A 2005 Honda civic.
Does anyone know by chance.

$367 for the kit from alchoholcanbeagas.com
It will run on pure E100 or straight gas or any combo of the two.

Doesn't sound like too much mucking around for the savings I'll enjoy. :)

I'd think Honda would have some great advice about running on straight Ethanol... But it won't be 100% because 96.5% is the best you can have in the open atmosphere... Plus, why would you want to run pure ethanol when it gets far worse gas mileage than straight gasoline or E85...??? E85 gets roughly 25% less MPG than gasoline, so just imagine what straight ethanol will get for MPG... How much time are you willing to put into producing fuel ethanol...??? I have more questions but will stop here...

Time to do some serious research... You need to know the facts, not just ask questions and expect answers...

But isn't research just a series of questions and answers?

That is very vague question. Do you expect everyone here to figure out how to convert a Honda civic engine to accept ethanol and simply post a tutorial? Personally, if I'm gonna go through the effort of making ethanol, I'm sure as hell gonna drink it! Good luck in your endeavor.

C'mon guys.
The dude finds the internet. Searches it and ends up here.
Goes to the trouble of signing up, and has been a member for a while,
Asks a pretty simple question that the ethonol gurus should be able to answer,
And he's told to piss off and read a book.

Mum said if you cant say anything nice, don't say anything at all.

Good luck Honda dude.

When Brazil started producing ETOH from sugar cane to run their cars (they didn't have oil production or money enough to use gasoline), they found that making pretty much 100% ETOH was easy (non-drinking style), but just a little water in it would make the engine misbehave badly. Adding 15% gasoline to the ETOH made those problems go away, though like Rad said, my rental car in Brazil got ~30% less mileage on E85 (alcool was written on the pump). Good luck.

Brazil produces loads of ETOH very cheaply. There are vast fields producing high quality cane sugar, and large plants processing it into ETOH. We have had cars running on ETOH for decades now.

In the 70s and 80s you had to choose which fuel you wanted to use when you bought your car. The ETOH ones were a pain to start up, specially on cold days.
Many parts need to be modified for the car to fully function on ETOH (higher compression rate, different fuel pump and hoses, different mixture proportion, etc...)

It was only in the early 90s that they started using materials that would be able to take either fuel (like hoses, pumps and tanks), and also electronic technology that reads the fuel being injected into engine and changes parameters to make it function properly.

Nowadays 90% of the cars being sold in Brazil can be run with either fuel, or a combination at any rate.
Even with the 25 - 30% less mileage, running a car on ETOH in Brazil is cheaper then running the same car on gasoline, since ETOH is way cheaper then gasoline.

Also, all gasoline sold on Brazillian gas stations has 20% ETOH, thats mandatory by law...

There you go, buy a Brazilian auto market car... Problem solved... :eugeek:

This, obviously, isn't the site to be looking for automotive ethanol conversions on... :shifty:

I saw a deal on the news a while back about brazil's use of ethanol. Seems they are making it out of everything. switch grass, and other things. That unlike corn, dont cause food prices to skyrocket because the total supply is going to make ethanol.

So I have a Q about running your car and this seems as good of a place as any.
If I can't produce enough ethanol to run the still for the next batch... isn't it pretty much a waste of time to simply trade energy? I use propane, and I don't think I make enough ethanol in a run to keep a fire burning to make the next run... Thus it seems like I should just use the propane in the car and not waste my time with the still.
If you are electric, again... Can your ethanol run a generator long enough to make the next batch? no? Then why not just use the electricity?

I'm not being an antagonist... I'm looking for a serious answer.
Everything I do or say may or may not have really happened... or it may or may not be all bull shit!

I think your right. at the hobby level, it is not nearly efficient enough to justify. I dont know that it is efficient enough at the industrial level. I have read that it takes 1.3 gallons to produce 1 gallon. that is everything from the tractors harvesting grain up to the energy to heat stills. Just a government subsidized green movement

I'm keeping my corn for likker. That way I don't have to justify anything. It's fun! Damn the cost.... Full Speed Ahead!

Not if you get bio mass and a heat source that is close to free.

Remember that the energy we get from gas was made and stored away millions of years ago. You can make the alc from celulose or waste biomass, using condensor preheating and a few other efficiency mods, you at least have a renewable resource. Solar stills are available, although not much good for hootch, will make fuel alcohol relativley cheap. Not saying you would, but you could.

Your still is a beverage still, not a fuel still. Make a fuel still and the numbers change.

I think the OP is refering to purchased fuel.

Corn is pretty mediocre as a fuel crop anyway, sweet sorgham on the other hand...
