Still on Ebay

Post by Firestorm34 »

I've been looking around for stills and came across this one on ebay. Never seen anything like this. Just want to know some other's thoughts on the still. Thanks

That looks like it uses a cheapo Job Lot pot...thin and weak metal. For that money, I built a 5 gal. good quality pot still. Just build your own.

Nor would I trust that "high temp gasket" that is on there. Looks like butyl rubber.

Yes there have been a few around who have bought this garbage. And it is normally the peal and stick foam gasket stuff you get at home depot to seal the doors in your house. Not something you want to use in a still.

I actually own this still. The gasket I don't know what it is made of but it's a very hard rubber type material. No stick on, no foam. I had to add some clips of my own but there is no vapor leak.

The submersible pump is self explanatory. No water leaks from the condensor and just keep the ice full in the bowl and I have no vapor escaping from the spout.

As far as the quality and keep in mind this is the first still I have ever seen and used but I have to say it's made well for a 3 gallon still. The copper piping has nice welds and it is very easy to operate. Consistent. I bring it up to a starting boil... turn the temp down to the mid 3's on the stove and it does its things just as I've seen in videos of distilling.

Might get a liter out of the 3 gallons.. (depending on the mash I suppose). I fill it up just under the rivets of the handles.

I do wish I did some research but was very excited to get started and purchased it before I even joined the forum here. I wish I had an 8 gallon still. I have an 8.5gallon fermentor and I have to do 3 runs in order to empty it.

If you need ice then the liebig isn't long enough to do the job and/or your reservoir is too small... When the liebig is properly sized your water reservoir should suffice for an entire run using room temperature (or tap temperature at the point of filling) should be adequate to knock down 100% of the distillate vapor throughout the entire run...

As stated, one can do better... :eugeek:

Well its a 3 gallon still. I don't see how it could b any longer. I have to use a 20lb bag of ice to do two runs. I know there are better designs but I don't have the skills to build my own. For the 100bux it does a nice job. As soon as the ice melts the condenser gets warm n I see vapor.

If any newbies read this, PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS "STILL"

The pot is made of very thin stainless steel. The maker drilled a hole and secured a piece of copper by two aluminum ring type thingies that screwed over each end of hte copper. There is already rust forming on the underside of the lid on the aluminum. The column just seats inside that copper piece secured in the lid.

Needless to say this is only a 3 gallon still. Gets me maybe half a handle worth and then I need to disassemble, pour out the wash, reload the wash and reheat which takes additional time and energy.

Avoid it. I wish I knew then what I know now.

I agree, what a ripoff...I made a 5 gallon for about the same price, and that's including the propane burner. It's just a waste of time to run a 3 gallon for 2-3 hours, and only get a liter or less.
