What is the best temp range to keep your still head at anyway for taking off product?

The thing is unless you spend a lot of cash on a calibrated thermometer you are most likely going to get an inaccurate reading. Then you have the other variables you need to take account of such as level above sea level which is going to affect temp readings.
For me I won't go off what my thermometer should read because most likely it isn't going to be what it "should" be.

my offset stabilizes at 172 degrees (lab grade thermo)

Column still? What kind of column still?
Cuts really should be made by smell taste and feel. Not numbers. There is a good thread about making cuts in the must read new distiller reading lounge.

I run a mile high 2 inch column still with all the mods praire has in his one post at 800 feet above sea level

There are no magic numbers to go by so forget you ever read that text or saw that temperature table...

ok i was worried for a sec just being cautious. i plan on drink some of my next batch that i run. all in all i think my first run went great but i couldnt get over 89 percent i thought i would have hit 91 or 92 with the setup. not sure why maybe i didnt pack the copper mesh tight enough.
any thoughts on that

First runs don't always work out as high as you want. Get some runs under your belt. And learn how to drive that still. You will have to play with the amount of heat and cooling you use to get the optimal output. And only one way to find what is optimal for you and your setup. Is to run it and try different things. And yes packing can be a big one to.
