Turbo triple distilled yeasted smells
I had two packets of turbo triple distilled yeast. I used it for a sugar wash and it had a smell to it and to the spirit. I've used the second packet in a cornflake wash. It bubble like mad for 6 days. Now I've raked of the wash the same smell is there that I had with the sugar wash. Is there any thing I could do to get rid of it before I run it. Would tomato paste help or is it to late
Re: Turbo triple distilled yeasted smells
it's too late.....
you could spend say $25 on carbon / filters etc or just do some birdwatchers etc and forget the turbo
persoanlly i would "dump" it unless you already have a filter otherwise not worth the expense

Re: Turbo triple distilled yeasted smells
hence all the we dont recommend turbos that you see all over the site. this probably would have helped before http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... 61&t=13267 but since at least part of the required reading has been skipped in this case its too late

What kind of carbon filters are they? If they include any plastics. I would not use them.

Re: Turbo triple distilled yeasted smells
It all come as a kit airstill filters yeast , carbon, turbo clear, carbon filters, flavourings. So my bad I used there yeast so I know not to next time. So main thing like know if can do any thing about smell. The sugar was I run it twice and it ok. When cornflake wash is ready I run it and do low wine cut then do spirit run this might help it.

Re: Turbo triple distilled yeasted smells
Mmmmm plastic spirits. Sounds tasty.
You will notice that plastics are frowned upon around here. Kinda like turbo jet fuel yeast.
Dilute it with clean water to 40% or lower and run it again and again and again. And see what you get.
Or use a carbon filter made of proper materials. Stainless, copper, or glass.
Posting while you were.
Oh the dreaded air still kit. Good luck with that.

And I did read that post but that post is about turbo 24 but I use triple distilled yeast which I thought was different as it take longer to ferment

Re: Turbo triple distilled yeasted smells
Turbo is turbo. They are crammed full of to much nutrients. That cause off flavors and smells. Along with push the yeast to their breaking point.

Re: Turbo triple distilled yeasted smells
give it a try filtering and then diluting and running again then see where that goes might help. just from now on plz stay away from turboes most of us just use regular bakers yeast for our washes works great and no off taste or smells when finished

And keep your ferments under 14% ABV potential.

Re: Turbo triple distilled yeasted smells
The cornflake have got lot vitamins on them so what with there nutrients in the packet, explains why it went mad after about 10mins then bubbled nonstop for 4 days then slowed day to stop by day 6. I just raked it of no and it started bubbling again I've not added any thing tho

Re: Turbo triple distilled yeasted smells
I cut the sugar for 8-10%ABV
Re: Turbo triple distilled yeasted smells
Just to reiterate for the gazillionth time, water is the best and cheapest filter available... Better than charcoal... Better than activated carbon... Better than a T-shirt or underwear... Dilute with plain old water and redistill... Water... Did I mention water being the best filter...???
Water...
Water...
Re: Turbo triple distilled yeasted smells
i didnt read all th comments but id try taking heads and tails out and just still it till the smell goes it should clean it up but still wont be as good as using a simple sugar recipe from hear and bakers yeast
Re: Turbo triple distilled yeasted smells
Had the same problem. Fix is simple: Liquid Carbon (Turbo Carbon) added while fermenting. Also its key to not use Sugar with Turbo yeast.
I have done over 30 batches and the best is All grain (very clean), second is Corn Sugar (barely noticeable off Flavours). Now the best yeast to date for me has been Still Spirits Turbo Yeast Triple Distilled, for me... but this is because i wanted to practice with cheap sugar and Corn Sugar (Dextrose) prior to speeding a lot on Grains and failing. Corn Sugar really has been the best for me.
Problem temperature must be controlled very carefully using turbo yeast. I did 2 batches each at the higher temp on package 22-24 Celsius, 2 at 20-22 Celsius, and 2 at 18-19 Celsius. What i have found the higher the temp the worse the off flavours. One batch at 22-24 (closer to 24) the off flavours were very strong. The lower temps seems to have less off Flavours for me. Cooler it is, the slower it goes so maybe less off flavours... Just not good to go under 18c in temp or the yeast stalls.
I have even tested how I stir the fermentation after it's done after 7 days when its time to add the Turbo Clear. I have skipped the spoon method and found that after fermentation its best to stir extremely well to De Gas. (A hand blender worked well for me at high speed) De Gas extremely well then add the part A of the Turbo Clear Wait one hour, add Part B of Turbo Clear this has a stirring problem too. No not stir part B hard but what seems to work well is to use the Hand blender at low speed put in Part B then stop blending cover and wait till clear for me 22 hours has worked great, also temp seems to have an effect hear too. Cooler the better results no more than 20c.
I have only been making Vodka for 1 year (I am at 35 25 litter batches, 6 failed at the start, Added PH Balancer & Corn Sugar so Batches 7-10 were really good, Batch 11 was so perfect (All Grain) but can't reproduce it yet, I have given up on Sugar and now use Dextrose (Corn Sugar) now they are almost perfect. I am now going back to all grain once again but its very hard for me to get a perfect product like batch 11. I would like to try Potatoes and all grain sometime.
So hear is my tried and true Recipe with Turbo Yeast, Triple Distilled:
Trip to Walmart for Spring water (it's cheapest)
Place the water in the same spot that you are fermenting let it come to temp (19-20c is perfect). Adjust house temp to 19 Celsius, seems to give you 19-21c for fermentation (wait one day)
HINT: Hot air rises, what i found if house is at 19-20 then the floor is at 18-19 which is perfect
Pour 4 litres (one Gallon) of water in kettle or pan bring to a almost simmering boil
While water is coming to temp sanitize your buckets and blender (I also put the Turbo Carbon and Yeast packet in the sterilizing water, Turbo carbon needs a little warm water and packet needs to be massaged to release the carbon back to liquid form.
Poor 4 litres of hot water in to bucket add 2 litres of spring water, Add the 7kg of Corn Sugar Still well with hand mixer and I mean well. ( Will add lots of Oxygen to the water too)
Open Turbo Carbon Packet and Add (Still well with hand mixer)
Top off with spring water to 25 litres (using hand mixer at top speed get that oxygen in)
Add yeast while hand mixing at medium speed
Cover (or put cover on tight with bubbler)
Wait 5-7 Days (Water will be dark but bubbling sound be stopped by 7 days) One time it stopped at 10 days. (Plain Sugar is faster than Corn Sugar)
I have a weather station in the house and I put the remote unit on top of the bucket to monitor temp (If your room temp is 19c it will stay at 20c -20.5c which really makes me the perfect sprit. I never open the bucket or stir during fermenting, i have down both and see no difference in product.
when fermenting is done De gas with Hand mixer and MAX Speed (After you have sanitized it) let reset will water stops moving and hit it once again at top speed (Need to get the bottom moving and might need to use a spoon (My electric hand mixer reaches well or you can get a mixing arm that fits on a drill from home depot this work really well.
Ok time to calculate your end time: Once your poor part A and Part B you need to distill after so if 22-24 hours will be while your sleeping then adjust your start time here. I find its best to distill after part be in done and you have filtered.
Open Part A of Turbo Clear - Add while mixing at high speed!!! This is key to a clear product - This is were all your off clovers come from!!! mix well and it will go away.
Wait one hour
Open part B - Using mixer get the wash moving low speed and I mean low speed. Pour in Part B and stop the mixer! This part should not be stir vigorously!!!
How if you have done it right after 12-22 hours (package says 12 -24) For me its been 22 hours it should get clear and i mean really clear. IF ITS NOT CLEAR YOU WILL HAVE OFF FLAVOURS!!!!
siphon off the liquid leaving the bottom (for me bottom 2-3 inches) its your liquid clear? Yes = Distill - No = You need to filter!!! I have tried everything and spent a lot of $$$ on filters trying to find the best. For me the BEST is ZERO WATER, its available at Walmart and is expensive and so are the filters but its good!!!! and its slow going but if you want the perfect sprit its worth it.
Now its time to distill. I use the Still Sprits T500. I am in Canada and it can be ordered in BC and in Novia Scotia. This thing is the best. No heads, No tails Love this machine.
Hope this helps you guys out. I spent 6 weeks on the forum before i started to invest. Remember one thing 750ml of Vodka is 32$-51$. Making it at home is 2.56$ per litre.
End result: Sugar = smelly product if you do not filter your wash prior to distill and filter again after distill
Corn Sugar = Really and I mean Really, Good Product but might still need to filter before distill but almost never after. (this depends if you waited long enough for it to clear)
All Grain: Superior Product no one will no its home made. Filtering is optional but I always do before. I forgot once and had a sweet taste but no off flavours.
Again, I am a newbie but these have been my lessons learned to date.
