NoTrack Internet Searching - Ditch Google if you're Stillin'

Post by Koula »

Seems that many of us interested in this hobby may be from surveillance states such as North Korea, USA, UK, France, Canada, or Australia. In light of recent revelations of the "entire internet" extent of NSA data collecting, it might have occurred to you to start using a different search engine. There is only one I know of that rivals Google in search power, in fact the results are more relevant as Google is known to be simply a massive facilitator of economic transactions, an ad-marketing platform first and a search engine second. The best part of having an ice-cold breakup with Google, is you no longer get ads showing on websites for products that you've recently looked at, you know, how you go to read the Guardian News online and there's a constant flashing ad for kitchen blenders that you looked at weeks ago? So anyways, if you're d'stillin' and want to minimize your digital footprint, consider giving http://duckduckgo.com a fair go instead.

And for a humorous look at what happens when you search with Google (care of DuckDuckgo): http://donttrack.us/

If you know of any other search engines promising to never track or record your search history, then definitely contribute.

Hi Wayne, there's no fine print and I'm not trolling for money. Really not sure what you're talking about, could you explain yourself? Just trying to help other distillers stay informed with the massive shifts occurring in this new digital age. Cheers.

Google's data mining is automatic in the aylogyrythms. Google's humans just tweak the machine without seeing the data. I have used Duckduk and it's a welcome relief except google will correct my spelling and make bloody good suggestions for my search. Ads will flash relevant or not.

Government is different, here the traffic providers are forced to hand over all traffic which is stored for 2-3 years by the govt agency. The govt takes its sweet time analizing it and if they do what they say they're doing then home stillers should trigger a 'good guy' response. The real question depends on what 'good guy' means...a zomby muppet, or a patriotic self reliant individual?

Koula I share your concern, but paranoid behaviour could be a trigger in the govment's book.

Thanks all for contributing. I never wanted to evoke paranoia, but rather contribute by reminding everyone that it's a healthy habit to be aware of your digital footprint and the unlimited growing power of those we elect or haven't elected but grant unlimited powers through their leverage of our fears.

If you are that worried about tracking, check out the onion, also known as TOR. Don't ask me no ?'s about it, just use what you can find online. Google it, or bing it or whatever. But it is basically untraceable unless you are a covert KGB operative with heavy tracking on your whole life...

Don't be so sure that the NSA isn't providing TOR servers... Just sayin...

I think that's a teeny bit paranoid, I wouldn't use TOR for the fact that some of the stuff you may come across could be very unpleasant i.e. child abuse images, It's also a selling ground for illegal drugs and gun running and supposedly hit men as well as a communication hub for terrorists.

I have only heard about TOR from friends. Never used it, that's why I said don't ask me about it. Couldn't answer if I wanted to.

You called Rad paranoid because he suggested the NSA may be providing the servers, then you said yourself its a hub for terrorists and a host of other illegal bullshit.

Hell ya the NSA could, should, be hosting the servers then, if they're doing their fucking job, which is a crapshoot.
In theory there's no difference between theory and practice. But in practice there is.

Eh? Why would the NSA be providing a network of servers for illegal activities? Here's a bit of recent news for you:

Don't see any mention of the NSA there.

From your link

... the FBI had taken over and maintained a site hosting child abuse material for two weeks in order to identify users. FBI uploads malicious code on the deep web sites while everyone is off at Defcon.

eh?

I dont know anything about this stuff. Just saying what Rad suggested seems plausible. Thats what I would do if I worked in the booberment and wanted to get a list of target suspects doing some particular crime involving the internet

Edit: Can you imagine if the ATF, or whatever they call themselves now, ran THIS site. HAHA. And used it to pick off high volume (sellin?) folk by scrubbing the site with search strings like "55 gallon drum fermenter" eh P? HAHAH :wtf:

When you access your bank account or connect to your work computer, this will probably be done with a VPN. A Virtual Private Network. This will give you a tunnel through the web from Point A to Point B which is secure and private with no eavesdropping.

There are many companies that will provide you with a VPN to a server located where ever you wish. This server could be located in the US, UK, Hong Kong or New Zealand.

After hooking up with the server in say Hong Kong, your computer is given a HK IP address, so any tracking stops at the HK IP address. You can use Google to your hearts content.

If you make a post on HD then the log in HD will show that it was posted from HK, NZ or whichever country the server you connected through is located. your home computer will not be identified.

There are free VPN systems that will allow you do this but you will be inundated with advertising, a few dollars a week will keep the advertising down and some privacy.

I have used this company before and it works very smoothly.

http://www.vpnaccounts.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

Be careful, it will also bypass all censorship programs and banned sites.

Until, and unless, I get busted for playing in the shed with my harmless quantities of personal consumption hooch Im staying away from any and all services like that. I dont consider myself a criminal, so Im not gonna start acting like one and sneaking around. I almost prefer to be out in the open, full disclosure. Any ATF boob can see everything Im up to, , and hopefully wont see me as a threat to national security, tax base, or any other reason to come after me.

^ This tactic (or very similar) is exactly what the federal agencies in Ozland engaged in to make kava kava illegal. Don't put it past any money generating government agency, they're operating businesses after all... often with agencies intertwined with "industry" interests, especially when considering big-pharma.

Of course I trust the HD though, since Kim Dotcom is protected by NZ, certainly HD is safe also... it is a NZ site isn't it?
