Post by newbietoo »

I've always wondered jus what blended whiskey was. Is it the product of different mashes blended then aged. Different mashes blended then run then aged. Different mashss run. Aged. Then blended.

My understanding is that blended whiskey is produced by blending different whiskey batches for the desired flavor. The assumption is that blending produces a more consistent flavor, since the flavor is not subject to the flavor of a particular batch, but is subject to the taste of the particular blending craftsman. I suppose that blending might also produce a good tasting whiskey from inferior stock, since the flavor derives from the blending and not the flavor of any particular whiskey.

+1

Your better distilleries pay their blenders good money to keep the consistency of the product within a very narrow range... They must have both a good nose and discerning palate...

Quoting the referenced article, "A blended whiskey (or whisky) is the product of blending different types of whiskeys and often also neutral and near-neutral spirits, coloring, and flavorings"

This reminds me of a Bismarck quote, "Je weniger die Leute darüber wissen, wie Würste und Gesetze gemacht werden, desto besser schlafen sie nachts. -- The less the people know about how sausages and laws are made, the better they sleep in the night."
