Measurement for Fleishchmann's Acive Dry Yeast

Post by CornMealKid »

Anyone here use Fleischsmann's Active Dry Yeast? If so, how much does each of you Shiners like to use in your 5 gallon batch? Currently using 4 packs (8 grams x4 = 32 grams) and my ferment runs rather slow (10-14 days). Heard some folks use as much as 4 tablespoons... How much do you use? I've done reading on this and realize there is no "correct amount" per se and many avenues will eventually or quickly produce alcohol, just wanna talk shop and hear from folks with a different process.

If you don't use this kind of yeast, ain't much of a point responding to this thread, wanna hear from those who use this yeast.

When I made birdwatchers I used 4 pkgs. of fleishchmann's and it took 2-3 weeks to ferment. I didn't see that as a problem.

Anyone use a greater number of 8 gram packages to yield a faster ferment?

I use about 1.5-2 TBSP per 5 gal wash. Fleischmans or Red Star. Quit buying the small packets or the jars, buy the 2-lb bulk at SAM's or Costco.

I purchase Fleischmann's Dry Active Yeast in bulk from Sam's Club and pay ~$5.00 for 2 - 1 pound vacuum bricks... I was using 1 Tablespoon per gallon but have cut back to 1/2 Tablespoon per gallon recently with very little difference in fermentation times... I make a starter using 1 Tablespoon of sugar per cup of 95F - 115F water most of the time... Fleischmann's likes the starter water to be fairly hot, as do several other brands...

I use to use 5 packets per 5 gallons ..now I use maybe a packet. There is no difference in ferment times. As far as flavor? Well my spirits of only gotten better over time as I've learned. It doesn't take much I'll tell you that much..and Like Rad said it does like a ~115 degree startup for this yeast. Personally I pitch it at room temp...9/10 times. Never had a prob doing that.

I use Fleischmann's Dry Active Yeast in bulk from Sam's Club too. 120 grams for 20 gallons, so 30 grams in five gallons.
Sounds real close to what you are using. Usually ferments out to run in two weeks. I try to pitch when my wash cools to 95F.
"yeah? yeah? the maple flavored kind?" A dog on you tube.
