Three main reasons... 1) Moonshine can be hard to come by, if you don't know the right people. 2) Its "illegal", and that makes people want it more. 3) People, most of them anyways, are stupid.

Its kind of like cannabis, back in my young and dumb days. I may have known 5 people selling, and only one had good quality, and all at the same prices. Same with shine, I got tired of looking for the good stuff. That's why I decided to get into this hobby. Cut out the middle man, save money, know exactly what I'm getting, and keep it all for myself. EDIT: And because I like learning how to do things that are considered a somewhat lost art.

Case of dumbass for sure . I've found good drinkin in every state that idjit passed through with no law hassels . Good quality , too .
The lure of the history and culture deludes many people into foolish actions and unwise expenditures . Case to point :
I live outside a large college town . Stupid students and even stupider out-of-towner tailgate partyiers are paying $40 a quart for low grade , single run white dog with no cuts made according to my police detective son in law . He doesn't bother them over the shine , is only looking for drugs .
He laughs at them while he is sharing cop stories with me and I'm sharing good drinkin with him that I don't sell to nobody .

I agree with points 2 and 3; especially point number 2. I think that may be a big part of why some of us are in this hobby. Not so much that it is "illegal" or to save money but that we don't like government telling us that we can't do something, when there is no sound reason for the restriction.

Just playin devils advocate here but how can someone be ok with the illegal production of likker but not be ok with the illegal(in most places) consumption of marijuana?
Before you say it I know that's easy for me to ask since I live in Colorado. Just strikes me as a double standard. Not a pot smoker myself and may have said the same thing here before but have decided that tryin to cover your ass in that fashion just isn't right. Ya'll gotta know if the feds really wanted to bust ya they could do so easily. Don't tell, don't sell. Same with the herb. Except here every post you make is tellin. Just sayin...

Maybe he figgered dealing with a supplier far from his back yard would keep him out of trouble? If so, he figgered wrong and burned $140 in fuel driving all over gods creation.

Don't you guys know the only way to get gen-you-wine Kentucky moonshine it to go to Kentucky? Sure you can get moonshine in every state but Texas moonshine ain't Kentucky moonshine and you can't get Kentucky moonshine anywhere else.

It was also a BS stop, I mean "improper display of a tag", That's about as BS as you can get to give an out of stater a ticket which is guaranteed to just get payed and dogs can be trained to "alert" to a hand signal or a word from an officer so they can give that as an excise to search their vehicle. I can tell you this, knowing that TN treats its out of state visitors as an ATM machine will keep me from spending any of my vacation time and money there, that's for sure.

One more thing, unlike The KYchemist, I do condone the use of cannabis legal or not. It can actually help people including a little girl in California who was suffering from severe seizures until The MM community came to the rescue. I now live in one of the two states that have legalized it for recreational use but don't use it myself, but I don't figure it does any more harm than many other things that are legal everywhere else.

I also see some very good reasons why some politicians want to keep home distilling illegal. #1 being people are stupid! If they were free to do whatever they want wherever they want they would use unsafe materials, would give blue alcohol to people, They would leave running stills unattended, they would run next to open flames with no safety equipment they would blow themselves and other people up or set fire to apartment complexes and dozens and dozens of other stupid things. Keeping it illegal helps keep it safer because people don't want to get caught so they tend to keep a low profile and be more discreet and safer as a result. I personally would like to see a home distilling license that wouldn't cost much but would require some sort of basic distilling safety course.

I agree with the whole medical side and have no problem with the recreational side. My father in law who was a prosecuting attorney turned to herb when he could not eat due to chemo. Lived three years with pancreatic cancer. Good or bad it didn't hurt.
