Looks like you can fix the problem of the thumper on the laminate and the slope of the worm all at once. Easy to raise up that thumper a bit with some insulating material (wood?) and get a nice slope down to the coiled part of the worm.
Re: She ain't exactly pretty. (Newbie still)
I'll throw a cork trivet under the thumper.
Bellybuster, can you explain that a little further?.
Pfshine, it's this type,. all brass., and about the rubber seals i am using, are as we speak, being subjected to 93% spirits

Rubber shouldn't be used period. PTFE pure musical cork or flour paste.

+1 to what PP said. Rubber is a no go, and any brass needs to be pickled before use.HDS wrote:..it's this type,. all brass...

I just gotta ask, what is the problem with rubber?, does it foul the taste?.
Since ethanol doesn't dissolve rubber, I, due to my inexperience have a hard time seeing the problem
.
And about the brass,. Well It is nice to know that it needs to be pickled.
But since you know about it, would it be that much trouble to explain how and what?
Personally i am thinking acetic acid?.

While ethanol may not "liquify" rubber, it will leech out certain chemicals that will contaminate the ethanol.
Most people who use brass will 'pickle' it with a 2:1 solution of vinegar/H2O2. Soak for about 10 mins or so (I think - I don't use brass) then rinse clean. Repeat every so often to be safe.
Remember, saftey first...always. If you're not 100% sure about something, always err on the side of caution.

Well vinegar is water, compared to the 32% acetic acid and water mix i have been using.
And about the ptfe o-rings, they are a bitch to buy in small quantity's.

Read the rules we live by. Should have been one of the first things you read. Not tormenting how many times this has been covered here.
Hot alcohol vapors are not the same as just alcohol. We wouldn't dell you to get rid of it. If it wasn't a problem.
And the search functions do work. You could have searched for pickleing brass. And had your answer.

Well, my mistake. But in general, rules are there so the users behave with some human dignity and don't backseat mod and flame on other users.
About the whole "because I say so", is something I in general don't agree with. If you have a proper explanation or a logic explanation, like above. That the rubber might leak unwanted chemicals and contaminate the ethanol. Then I am all ears.

It's been suggested to do the research here in these forums... We can't spoon feed every new member simply because they don't think they should have to do some reading... The answers are here, as well as answers to questions you don't even know you have yet...

8. These forums take a very strong negative view on the usage of plastics and synthetics in distilling. It simply is not safe to use in any area of hobby distilling (however HPDE buckets are acceptable for fermentation.) There simply are too many types of plastics and lack of reliable information about plastics, for us to reliably advocate their use anywhere in the distillation apparatus. Also, from past posting history, this topic seems to quickly boil down into an almost religious flame war. Thus we simply will not put up with it, and posts about any form of plastic use will be edited, deleted or locked. There is a forum for proven info for or against any material (material/safety.)
Yes the rules are there also to keep you from getting yourself into a flaming situation.
