Hi I hope this is the right section for this. I have a 15 gallon blue barrel same as the 55 gallon ones and its food grade and had food grade stuff in it and I am trying to find out if I can use it to hold my stripings and maybe hold some of my final product and the final is 92% so I want to find out any information before I wast good shine do to leaching of the barrel thanks also what do you think about 1 gallon water jugs?

Use glass for your spirits. You can ferment in the plastic however. I wouldn't put any of my drinkin' liquor in plastic, even "food grade" plastic. My liquor is just too important to me to ruin it in plastic.

OK but what about my low wines that are going to be run threw the still again? Do you think they would be ok since it is not a high proof or should that be on glass as well?

High proof anything doesn't belong in plastic, IMO.

Get some kegs. I have a keg for a still, one for low wines storage, and another under the bar full of vodka.

Your low wines could actually be even higher proof than drinking proof spirits... Wise up and steer clear of plastic for anything other than fermenting... It's not just about your spirits, it's about your health and safety...

15 gallons of low wines? I store all mine in 1 gallon glass jars. Would never put any of my upper proof in plastic.

I read some were else that storing in plastic is fine along as its at a cool temp. And my friend has some in milk jugs without any issue any thought about the temp?

I use glass carboys or sanke kegs.
The whole process is way to much work to just f~#k it up by storing in plastic :problem:
This site stongly frowns upon (and for good reason) use of plastic in our processes for anything stronger than mash/wash strength alcohol.
It's nice you found your self a small barrel, there are plenty of other uses for it ie; store grains, make a dunder pit :thumbup: or anything else besides low wines.

$10 says most of use could tell the difference between stuff stored in milk jugs and stuff stored in glass. We're working with one of the strongest solvents around. Just use glass, stainless or copper. Preparing to stock up for my wedding. Bought 10 five gallon glass containers to store the booze.
No, officer, I wasn't distilling alcohol! It was probably that guy!

Glass or stainless is only thing I would consider. If you got an extra keg or a glass carboy that be what I would use. Plastic is more than frowned upon for anything distilled.

Reading somewhere else was the first mistake . You have here multiple thousands of members dedicated to your safety and well being as well as propagation of our craft . We share information and police our own forum . Bad information gets excised on the getgo .

I would use glass or stainless only. If you are the curious type and don't mind wrecking a quart of whiskey, take and fill a clean quart milk bottle and a clean quart mason jar with the same whiskey and taste it in a month or two. You will be pitching the plastic whiskey and then you will understand why we only use glass or stainless. Personally, I can taste the difference of milk in a plastic jug as compared to milk in a glass bottle. Trust these guys , they won't steer you wrong.

Have your friend come here and post his scientific findings and MSDS information that proves out that milk jug synthetic is safe cold or warm... I can guarantee you right now that he won't come do that because it just isn't true and there is no MSDS evidence to support such a fallacy... And your friend just might be selling and therefore doesn't care about what he markets his spirits in because he's not the one drinking it...

I fermented wine in a five gallon plastic water jug once. I swear it tasted like pvc glue smells! I will never do such again. If it does this with wine imagine what high proof alcohol would do!
