contrahead, that's WAY too much synthetics in contact with high proof alcohol... I sure hope you're joking... :problem:

What about fabrication of an all oak funnel and tube instead? Use cone fit transitions for the joints in lieu of any adhesives or synthetics. Got a lathe? Chuck in some aged oak and turn yourself a funnel. Getcha' an oak post and bore a hole thru it for the tube. No plastic.....classic constuction.....not that I'd EVER need to charcoal filter.....

Certainly I would not advocate using synthetic materials with high proof alcohol - if better materials were available. But that is the whole point.

It takes time, effort and money to build a good still from copper, stainless steel, ceramics or glass. To make an optional accessory like a carbon filter from these materials might also prove tedious - especially if or when the working concept has not been proven to one's satisfaction.

So rather than to blithely accept advice from sagely experts here that seem to have opinions about everything (even upon charcoal filtering which they probably have never tried or know nothing about); people like roberto188, Bagasso, johnny108 and I opt for actual personal experience.

Until a wheelbarrow load of copper plumbing or Pyrex chemistry lab equipment falls from the sky and hits me on the head, I'll test with materials that I can afford. By using cheap and eventually disposable (but FDA acceptable) components to do our initial testing, I and others should know to our own satisfaction - if carbon filtering is a worthwhile tool or not. Our positions will be supported with facts and experience rather than with simple opinions.

The Rules by Which We Live
The Rules by Which We Live wrote:8. These forums take a very strong negative view on the usage of plastics and synthetics in distilling. It simply is not safe to use in any area of hobby distilling (however HPDE buckets are acceptable for fermentation.) There simply are too many types of plastics and lack of reliable information about plastics, for us to reliably advocate their use anywhere in the distillation apparatus. Also, from past posting history, this topic seems to quickly boil down into an almost religious flame war. Thus we simply will not put up with it, and posts about any form of plastic use will be edited, deleted or locked. There is a forum for proven info for or against any material (material/safety.)

contrahead, whatever you say or post pictures of is subject to scrutiny to the satisfaction of the HD membership, not you or any other single individual... When something looks unsafe, or is unsafe, we try to insure that anyone else reading about such materials or actions doesn't follow down the same wrong or potentially wrong path... We check the MSDS of most everything we use in this hobby for good reason... Peoples health and safety depends on it... Your personal choices for safety have no impact on what we do or do not condone... Excuses about not being able to afford materials makes it sound like this hobby is beyond your financial ability and I highly doubt that such is the case... Safety, first and foremost...

posting pictures of a carbon filter made from FUNNY PIPE (Polyurethane) is in fact advocating its use. better materials are available you made a choice

not to find them before building a Polyurethane prototype. how do you test your filtered product? drink it?
