Fuse Protection

Post by gflower1 »

Just looking to see what/if you guys use for fuse protection. I had a 10a 5x20 glass fuse built into my 110 line but looking to put something inline for 240v/30a. Wasn't sure if there was a standard or commonly available fuse for this and where to find it (other than the inter webs). I've checked RadioShack and a few autocrats stores and they just don't carry that high of ampacity in stock.

What you need is a circuit breaker, not a fuse... Several members have incorporated circuit breakers into their controller boxes... The electrical service box most likely has large fuses inside already if you have old glass fuses...

Thanks rad! Picked one up this morning before reading this.
Just standing in the parts store the fuses and breakers are right next to each other... Hit me like a brick!

ideally a GFI breaker, a standard 30amp breaker will allow a lot of current to be sucked down before it drops.

ground fault breakers are all but instant.
I finally quit drinking for good.

now i drink for evil.

I was fortunate enough to come across 2 fairly cheaply. Don't think they are GFCIs and the casing did show they pull a lot before engaging.
Still much better than running down glass fuses though!

These I'm mounting inside my controller. My house was built circa 1930 though and does have the glass breakers in the service box. Hoping to rewire the place soon though as it hasn't quite kept up with the modern electronic age! [CONFOUNDED FACE]

Right... I got that... I have a drawer full of circuit breakers and will probably be incorporating one in my next 240V controller...

A circuit breaker or fuse will help save your hardware from serious damage. A GFCI can save your life. Money spent on a GFCI for the power supply going to your controller is money very well spent first for your sake and then for the sake of your equipment.

Thanks Skipper! I have the nema-style locking connections on the back. Planning on installing a 10/3 line in my garage later this summer when I move back home (hopefully under the supervision of my master sparky uncle)!
I haven't gotten that far but I'm assuming the gfci can go in the breaker box???

In the meantime, I need to check the breaker panel in my apartment to see what's in there.

I've was fortunate enough to acquire a set of these breakers and put them in my box for eqpt protection. I have a 30a on my 240input and a 10a on my 110 input
