crow...if you see blue in your foreshots and tails....it's in your hearts. You just can't see it!

I'm all SS except for some packing in the column, about 4" of copper mesh. I never see any blue anything, anytime in my distillate.

Yeah but you may well have a hell of alot of other stuff in your liker you can't see a I wouldn't drink. Blue tinge occasionally seen in LATE tails does NOT relate to copper in the still and could be produced in a glass still as I am very sure you are aware. A full stainless still is IMHO about as bad as it gets. Hope ppl using these full alloy contraptions take carefully thought out steps to ameliorate the uncatylized contaminated solutions I and many others believe they are producing, you may be ok with you 4" of copper but I would not feel safe with this small amount of amelioration myself as for a blue tinge in the very early fore shots yes an oxidised copper still can produce that, it generally happens in the base of the column left on a boiler with stillage. If a violent heat up it not reduced before the still starts to produce copper oxide can carry over into the early fores, its more common of an occurrence in a pot still as I use to run but a scenario not impossible to reproduce in a plated still if you are careless enough. just be on the safe side I wouldn't recommend ya drink the early fores, personally i don't even drink heads :moresarcasm: . Point is the blue tinge at the end of the run is not in a cut that you will drink without re-running anyhow, as for blue hearts I can not imagine other than massive smearing (in which case it ain't "hearts") what could cause that never had it never seen it and never heard of it :thumbup:
As far as the subject of ethyl Carbamate goes it does not relate in any way to this thread or even necessarily relate to copper so i see no need for it to be discussed here, its off topic that simple

I apologize for bringing up a dead thread. I recently found this, the first I've ever seen it, in a batch of apple brandy I ran about a month ago. It was in the last jar of tails, below 20%, nothing in the fores, heads or hearts and they didn't show up until the jars sat for a week or 2. I ran 5 gallons of cider through a reflux still, I kept it slow and low. No other jars had any of this in them. I did run a vinegar wash through just before the brandy. I'm thinking it might have been the yeast nutrient since I've never used any before and never had this happen. My main question is, Do I need to rerun the whole batch?

Seriously, you should only need to re-run jars that have noticeable accumulations... If the rest smell, tastes, feel, and look fine then there shouldn't be any need to re-run them... But if you want to err on the side of safety, re-run all of it...

HA! Smurf jizz that's what it looks like. The rest is smells and tastes really good. I'm getting ready to age it on some oak and I was hoping I didn't have to rerun it because I'm afraid I'd ruin it.
