Giving your still a name

Post by CROW-EATER »

While researching types of stills and historical information on distilleries I've found that some people give their stills a name, even some comercial distillers have named their stills.

I thought it would be fun to discuss how and why names are chosen.

I get the ball rolling ... after a small handful of runs I've decided to name my still Aunt Beth.

My Aunt Beth was strict but fair, she didn't blur the lines between right and wrong, she was precise and got things perfect the first time with her chosen profession which was Calligraphy ... what a great old school art.

I recon my still is much like her, it likes to be run in a strict manner, nice and steady to maintain a good ballance.
It doesn't blur the lines between heads, hearts and tails .. each one comes along with total predictably and no uncertainty.
One run and it's done ... now that's precision
Distilling alcohol ... that's as old school as button up boots.

Here's cheers to you Aunt Beth

As per my OP in the other thread;

My propane spirit still is "Samantha, a sweet spirit"

My electric still is "Candy, cause she's a stripper"

Course now I have several others, my 20L keg still I call "runt" but the rest just sit and wait...
Numerous 57L kegs, some propane, one 220v electric with stilldragon controller. Keggle for all-Grain, two pot still tops for whisky, a 3" reflux with deflag for vodka. Coming up, a 4" perf plate column. Life is short, make whisky and drag race!

I call my keg based pot still Bessie. Like a milk cow, she gives me what I like to drink. Ironically, my dad named his Bessie.

My big CM is called "The Neutralizer" because it is purpose built to only be used for neutral. The flute is "Muggles Too" because it was inspired by Mash Rookies "Muggles" but my wife calls it "Bubblicious" because it is very bubbly when it runs and I sit there and watch it "Like it is a pole dancer"

Does your still have a name?

Thought this thread deserved to be resurrected after having researched pics of stills for column lyne arms earlier and seeing how many had names.

As of tonight, my still (simple pot atm) has been christened "Sentimental Lady". The opening lyrics (Fleetwood Mac) tell a story of a a relationship between copper, spirit and distiller...

"You are here and warm
But I could look away and you'd be gone
'Cause we live in a time
When meaning falls in splinters from our lives
And that's why I've traveled far
'Cause I come so together where you are
And all of the things that I said that I wanted
Come rushing by in my head when I'm with you
Fourteen joys and a will to be merry
And all of the things that we say are very sentimental..."

Best, Drifter
