Boiled yeast as a nutrient ?

Post by FreeMountainHermit »

Guys, Found an ancient 500g sealed bag of bakers yeast awhile back and thought I boil some of it up to use as a nutrient for our little yeastie friends. Is there a general rule of thumb as to how much to use per gallon of wash or even in relation to the amount of yeast pitched ???

Made a starter out of some of it as well as proofing a small amount and seems to be pretty darn anemic thus my question.

Thanks, FMH.

FMH,

I use about a cup of yeast slurry (not dried yeast) in a 10 gallon ferment. I boil the slurry briefly as I'm adding the crushed B-complex vitamins, Tbs 18-10-10 fertilizer, and tsp of epsom salts. The whole concoction seems to boost yeast activity for me.

Sorry I can't answer how many grams of dried yeast to add for use as nutrients specifically.

Pugis Yeast bomb, is meant to be the bees knees, not sure if you could get a way with less yeast, you prob could.

2 vitamin B, crushed with mortor and pestal
5 teaspoons of 20-0-0, agrcultural fertalizer
1/4 teaspoon of epsom salt
1/4 cup bakers yeast
1 gallon water
Boil all for 15 minutes and strain.

Thanks SP. Forgot about a PYB even though I've done that in the past.

Sometimes I'm kinda feeble minded and need a kick in the ass to get back to square one.

I have started proofing my nutrient yeast before boiling for nutrient value rather than boiling dry yeast... So far it seems to be performing well...

so you rehydrate it before you boil it, what does that give you, more bang for your buck?
so how much yeast do you use in the starter?

I think it provides more rapid nutrient uptake during the initial aerobic fermentation (reproduction) phase and early anaerobic fermentation phase... When I have just boiled dry yeast it doesn't seem to break down as well as when I let it proof... I'd compare it to be similar to using trub... YMMV...
