eBay - 240v 5500w PID controller kit w/ element moonshine E8
I have seen this item listed on eBay and the price seems decent. Do any of you guys have any experience or have an informed opinion of this particular controller?
Also, I believed I have read on this forum that there was a forum member who was building controllers for sale, anyone know contract info for this person.
Any assistance greatly appreciated.

BG,
If you control your SSR with a PID, it had better be capable of running in manual mode, not temperature controlled. I assume you know and understand this. Otherwise, look elsewhere for a HEAT INPUT controller.

Do you have a link...??? By that short description it doesn't sound like the right tool for the job like still_stirrin mentioned...

Assuming it is this one, http://www.ebay.com/itm/220-240v-5500w- ... SwbYZXbPBW" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow it looks like it would work. Seller claims it works well in manual. For someone who doesn't want to wire one up, it seems like a decent price. It comes with an Auber PID and those are pricier. I would spend the extra $10 to upgrade to the stainless base for the element myself. $380 is on the higher end as you could build it for around $175 or less, but you are paying for them to do all the work. What's your time worth to you?

+1 with Snackson - $380 is crazy high priced. If you don't mind a little bit of basically pre-mapped wiring Still Dragon has a prefab 220v full controller box for under $50 here: http://stilldragon.com/index.php/diy-co ... r-kit.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow It doesn't have a PID though if you really want one.
I got my element from Brewhardware.com and back then I had to wire it myself. Now he sells a prewired one: https://www.brewhardware.com/product_p/ ... ple_tc.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
That saves you like $250 for the next set of supplies you will need...like sugar, or grain, or a 55 gallon drum...there's always something

That's exactly the eBay listing I'm looking at. The guy selling them is listed as schnappstills and has a good eBay rating. As far as making my own; its not a question of what my time is worth but a total lack of knowledge in electrical/electronics. I know barely enough to be dangerous and chance of electrocuting myself or burning my house down. I'm sure someone (with the required skills)could buy all the needed parts and build one for much less than $380, but when compared to $550'ish from MiHigh or Hillbilly that price looks attractive.... if it is a quality product and will work. Does any know of a Forum member who build them for sale; seems like I remember that someone here was offering them for sale at one time.

I think Mulekicker used to build them, but that was while back. Not sure if he still does though.

Re: eBay - 240v 5500w PID controller kit w/ element moonshin
A controller is really very simple to build. I also have a brew hardware element. I got the one with the plug already built in. I was very nervous before hand as well. I decided to order the still dragon kit. I wired it according to the simple controller thread. I also bought a 30amp switch at lowes. I will probably wire into the mix. I do suggest getting a multi meter. the little booklet in the package will show you how to test for resistance/continuity. After soldering my ferrule on my keg and tri-clamping my element in. I did a water leak test for 3 days outside. then tested to make sure their was no path from one of the hot lines to the keg. I haven't tested under power yet. I am hoping to be running in a few weeks. just waiting for a free weekend. relax...have a homebrew, use caution and test your work.
Cheers

Nice controller deer Hunter. I already finished my SCR controller, but I like the looks of yours better. The insulated wires pulled out at the connection to the element. Do you have your parts list here somewhere?Deerhunter wrote:These are very simple to build.......This is the one I built. All the info is here.

$380 is real steep and the one listed in the link is a KIT! You still have to put it together
