Hackberry

We recently moved to a house that is only heated with wood, so in a search to get us firewood for this winter, I stumbled upon a guy giving away a hackberry tree that he cut down in his yard. I had never heard of it, but figured burning it had to be better than us freezing to death, so we picked it up. Got a truck and trailer load of it. Finally got it split up, and boy is it decently pretty. Saved out a few pieces to make my daughters each a jewelry box and got to thinking how it would do to age whiskey. Have any of you guys ever tried it? Which do you think would be better, toasted or charred or toasted then charred? Unfortunately where we moved to don't have space for my setup, so I won't be able to try it, was just wondering if it was worth saving out to try or not.

Google is your friend... I wouldn't use it... Try Googling "is hackberry wood poisonous" and make your own educated decision...

I did that and didn't see anything bad. But I won't try it. Not worth risking anything over, just had the idea pop in my head to ask before we burned it all.

Hackberry, containing a skin irritant and whatever else, you surely wouldn't want to ingest it... That would be like drinking poison ivy water...

Yea, I'll stay away from using it for that. We'll just burn it all away.
