I don't get it but maybe I'm one of those "cronies" :problem:

If you see something say something, that's what I do and always have no matter who the person is. If you see someone being rude to someone else politely speak up. It may not seem like it at the time but it makes a difference and things change.

You mention Rad as if he is still an active member but he got the ban hammer years ago for exactly what you are complaining about. Many other people have also gotten banned or time outs for such behavior. I'm sure it's difficult to watch and moderate everything and sometimes people just slip up. Have you ever been in a foul mood and said something in a way you shouldn't have? Members here are trying to keep people safe and the hobby moving in the right direction where some forums and youtubers often teach unsafe practices that you somehow have to persuade people to unlearn and people tend to be resistant to that and fight you so, yes sometimes you get frustrated and sometimes you might slip up and get a bit rude but sometimes it's necessary. Sometimes it's not and that's when you and others need to step up and say something.

Waterbelly,
You are the person you are, but you may find these articles of interest, and hopefully come away with some new understanding of yourself. Not meant to offend, just to enlighten...

Why is this forum so hostile?

I don't think it is.
If you're looking for hostility that's what you will find.
I'm here to find and share knowledge.

The Mods here on Homedistillation have always amazed me.
They have to keep the lid on the drama with thousands of members from all walks of life.
And some members are even sober while posting.

I enjoy the fact that there isn’t any BS flying around this site. You say you’ve been at this for 8 months and you’ve been a member less than a month, you claimed that you were a “lurker” here for quite sometime. You had to have seen the ins and outs of the HD before you came on board. Did you sign up just to complain?
Without getting political I think the whole world has gone to shit as far as pandering to the ignorant lazy masses goes. The internet is inherently full of trolls and people who are ruthless because they hide behind a screen. This forum is probably one of the nicer ones around.
It’s laughable that you throw mud at the forum and then admit that it’s full of useful information…. If you guys weren’t so knowledgeable I’d leave…what a joke. Membership isn’t a requirement here. That’s one of the things that make this site so awesome. Thank the heavens that there aren’t any cooperate sponsors or this site would turn into nothing but political correctness and watered down BS.
Freedom had been hunted round the globe; reason was considered as rebellion; and the slavery of fear had made men afraid to think. But such is the irresistible nature of truth, that all it asks, and all it wants, is the liberty of appearing.

As Chug mentioned, its an inherently risky hobby from a lot of directions, the mods and members get tired of being gentle, then people get upset when they get their hands smacked.

People ask for advice then it isn't what they want to hear, they argue without any fact or evidence and get shut down, then run away with tears in their eyes because there is a good chance that has never happened to them before.

New users come here with a "groundbreaking novel idea" not realizing its the same idea that's been posted, and over posted, and posted some more, then get upset when they get told they aren't doing anything new.

Someone will start a thread, looking for advice then not bother to read the response, or chime in a thread with something that has already been said, or chime in with a canned answer that they read somewhere off someone who read it somewhere, just to get post count.

Fuck peoples feelings, share good information, share reliable sources. Stop nonsense when you see it. If you get trounced a bit: learn something from it, get back up and keep going. Mental toughness and stamina are good traits, being able to learn from, and embrace your mistakes is an even better one.

You are going to have bad jars off the still, you can learn from them or you can cry and quit. You might have a few fewer bad jars if you take the time to figure out why, and listen to what some of the old timers have to say.

If you can't handle a little forum pressure this really may not be a great hobby for you. I truly believe the mods and most members are trying to protect us from ourselves, you should thank them for being harsh with you.

Most of all, if you are convinced you are right, be tenacious, don't get personal, don't take things personally. Turn off your emotions and find facts and cite info that supports your claim. Even the most seasoned can learn from young members, worst case you find proof you are wrong and learn from it.

Ive been on HD almost from the start in 2002.Ive seen it go from handful members where it might take a week to get a question answered to what it is now. This has all been done for free .At first Uncle Jesse carried weight of keeping site up himself . Later needed donations so we could stay ad free. Sharing knowledge has always been free .Hope for shining becoming legal here is still the dream. After the twenty years Ive been on HD Im still amazed at what people can find to bitch about .Seems closer I get to 70 less time I have for bullshit .Time for this thread to die

This place is fantastic, helpful, generous, and honest.
I've had my slap on the wrist. I'm also 62, so understood it for what it was, fixed it and moved on.
Admins, moderators, and uncle Jesse, thank you.

 I felt enough has already been said so I wasn’t going to throw my two cents into the hat but EricTjhe Red’s comment just reminds me that we have a lot of members that come from all walks of life. Different backgrounds. different experiences, different ages, etc. It’s easy to misinterpret meanings and we all need to have a bit of a tough skin at times. We learn by our mistakes, we learn by our successes, and if just if we listen to others we might learn a thing or two.

To be fair to the OP I have seen some noob dogpiles. Even if posted in the noob section. Using a PID controller is a favorite. However, I would by no means say that this site is "hostile". Or call anyone here a c**t. That doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement though and I do think the OP's point can be taken that some of the crusty among us could use a little more restraint. That doesn't mean that you can't be firm and direct. I think it is a pity that the OP was a little hyperbolic because I do think it is important to be welcoming and kind if the community is to grow and thrive and we could do better at that.

As to the mods and how they do their job, big thumbs up. They keep this place from becoming a cesspool. I very much appreciate and applaud their efforts.

I work in a very progressive university. I'm surrounded by thin skinned easily offended persons who walk around trying to be offended. They asked me to define my "pronouns" I told everyone I have no pronouns cuz I'm un-offendable. They can call me asshole or your majesty cuz it don't matter in the grand scheme of life.
I come to this forum to gain knowledge. There is absolutely nothing someone could say to me that world offend me. Maybe I'm just a thick-skinned coonass from louisiana but I got no problem with anyone agreeing or disagreeing with me cuz in the end I'm still getting information.

Not to mention comprehension levels that are all over the place. Some of us just take longer than others to comprehend some things. This sometimes makes it very difficult for responders to discern true misunderstanding vs laziness, no doubt a contributor to some folks' hurt feelings. In many cases miscommunication can be attributable to the speaker as much as the listener.
