Strange Issue With Sugar Wash

Post by drumwzrd »

I haven't done a basic sugar wash in a while and decided to do one since I found one more batch of turbo yeast left on the shelf. Here is the strange thing that has never happened.....I use the same turbo yeast that I always use just for sugar wash and normally the thing bubbles nice and violently for a few days. I also make sure that the temperature never dropped below 75 degrees. This time, the bubbles were slower and here's the kicker.....I am on the 16th day of the ferment and still going. When I remove the stopper and smell the wash, the alcohol content is VERY high yet the yeast is still producing. Anyone ever have this issue?

Usually it's due to too much sugar and the pH is crashing.
As you can tell, turbo yeasts are frowned on here as they tend to make non-quality drink which is what most of us here at HD aspire to. Quality, not quantity.
Seems you're shooting for quantity so don't expect too much approval in your methods.
Stick to sweetfeed/UJ and bread yeast while learning and especially lower SGs. You'll be glad you did.

Any endeavor launched on the basis of finding "...one more batch of turbo yeast on the shelf..." is fraught with peril.

Oh well, as with all of my questions in the past, what did I expect?

No answers and just a bunch of smart assed remarks from this piece of shit forum. So since most people on here really just seem to enjoy fucking with new members, I'll fill you all in.......I enjoy drinking very heavily. I could care less about the flavor of fucking corn, barley, wheat, oats, apples, bananas, dog shit, or whatever the fuck else you guys pride yourself to make in your runs. I go for the highest alcohol content with very little flavor and enjoy getting drunk frequently. I asked a straightforward question and received one good answer of the "PH is crashing" so I appreciate that. I guess I'll just go about my business elsewhere and I'll let the door hit me in the ass nice and hard on the way out just to satisfy the handful of cocksuckers that are on here.

You didn't tell us enough for the poster to know that, so he was guessing. Whether, or not, he is correct is a coin toss.

That ferment might be "just right" in its own ways to keep running high....

Addatives from the tap comes mind from processing to your end.

(guess)

Or a solid nutrient batch in that bag...

Hopefully with the proper cuts and finishing/ time you got something to work with.

With an attitude like that perhaps you should go elsewhere... You never stated what your recipe was so we are left to surmise that you have fallen in with the greed factor... If you don't like the advice given, don't ask questions and just bumble along on your own in silence... You are the one who came here asking for help and it was provided... Just because you didn't like the advice provided doesn't mean you have any right to start swearing at our membership... :problem:

Pretty obvious after the gentleman's last post that there was greed factor involved,,,,,,,on more than one level.

Seems there never was any intent on actually learning anything,,,only taking the silver spoon.

I don't know drmwzrd...I am a relative "newby" here, and have YET to be "f'ed" with by the senior members. I've been offered nothing, but great guidance from day one here. from putting my still together, to doing my first SUGAR WASH run the other day! Everything has gone great. So not sure what your issue is, other than Turbo Yeast makes a crap product, and the old timers here are just sayin so.

Jeepers. Rad has a kind side. Nice reply, dude. Then again...

...maybe he's beeen hacked. :moresarcasm:

Heh. I actually take a shot at a civil answer and get gigged for guessing (true enough). Honestly, that's no big deal but what annoys me is that I didn't show back up in time for the execution. That's what I get for going target shooting instead of camping out here. :problem: :ewink:

I especially liked cob's "wait for it" and rad shows up three posts later. Amazing.

Drumwzrd,

You posted in February…is it cold where you are ? That will cause your ferment to slow down….In germany they take several months fermenting wines.

One easy thing you could do is to place a temperature probe in the wash and compare that temperature to the room temperature.
When they get within a half degree C you’re done.

as for Turbo yeast, I use it to make vodka…2X distillation in a packed column along with carbon treatment my vodka will stand up against any commercial vodka you want to throw at it. I have had many blind tastings and I tell you this is the truth. I like a turbo sugar wash because of the yield and ease of working with the stuff.

Cheers,
Max

Hi Max,
I used to do the same thing, but have found bread or distillers yeast plus keeping the SG under 1.080 to be far superior and no carbon treatment also.
A double batch of 9% wash yields more than 1 batch of 15% turbo wash, and still takes less time for finished product.

Hi Aladan..

Your probably right about that. What I do is a little more complicated. I take a years worth of dregs (about 50%ABV) and run that along with the turbo wash. So I know from the beginning I am going to have some separation issues. I use a 42” column with propak and that works perfectly. That said I do get a lot of ethyl acetate. Many variables are known to affect acetate ester production including the yeast strain used, the composition of the fermentation medium, and the fermentation conditions. So I am not sure if it’s the yeast, higher temperture or the high alcohol wash…all known to promote ethyl acetate.

Cheers,
Max

That was harder than I can slam a screen door.
I am way brand new to this and after watching scores of vids and reading posts I still can't find some basic laws of distilling.
I bought dady and everything I have seen said use turbo.
Also why is everything thing in metric. It's hard enough already. :D
That being said I want to make the best product ever. So I'm willing to sift thru it and be patient, but it is a challenge.
