I started distilling some wash yesterday with a newer pot still that i built
Simple sour mash recipe handed down by my great grandpappy
I ran slow in order to get quality over quantity while making usual cuts and tossing foreshots, but with no hydrometer I can't be precise on what i ran
Out of 5 U.S Gallons I had about 2 & 1/2 quarts great drinking product.

My great granpappyy read the bead and told me it was about 150 - 160 proof.
We then commenced to drinking.
We both must have drank 1/2 - 3/4 of a cup each, which wasn't but 3 good swallows / gulps
Damn I was drunk as hell
Way beyond any over the counter store bought crap.
When I woke this morning I was still slightly drunk and stumbling
As the day wore on and I sobered up I noticed that I had no hangover at all.

Man I was tore up from the floor up!

Glad to hear that you had a successful run...

NEVER drink high ABV spirits without diluting to 80 - 100 proof... You'll dehydrate you body and abuse your internal organs... That is the biggest problem... When consumed in moderation you shouldn't end up with a hangover from distilled spirits made with proper cuts... The problem is that the spirits taste so pure that you don't realize you've drank too much until it's too late... Grandpappy should have warned you about that...

Invest in an alcoholmeter so you can make proper dilutions to drinkable levels... You can't rely on the burn test because even 80 proof still burns so you won't know if you've diluted to 80 proof or 120 proof... Better to be safe than sorry...

i feel what we drank was safe amounts.
Grandpappy is 80 years old and an old school fart....LOL

yes i should get a few measuring instruments, no joke.
guess i need to hit ebay.......no local brew shops in town

But its nice to hear that you got tore up with your Gran Pap.

I like my spirits at 65 to 70% then cut with my mixer. Nice and proofy.
