fermentation done?

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.
Pics are VERY welcome, we drool over pretty copper 8)

fermentation done?

Post by fryguy17601 »

I have a sugar wash of 17.5 lbs of sugar and turbo yeast. It has been sitting for 8 days now. It is showing as 20 proof and the hygrometer is showing at the very top above the 999 which is above the 1.0 mark. It has gotten colder and the bucket temp is down to 63 which I know is to cold but if it is ready I would like to run it through my reflux still.

Thanks

If the SG is at 1.000 or lower, which yours is, and the bubbling has all but stopped, and the yeast is dropping, then the fermentation should be complete...

it is still very cloudy, does this matter or can I run it cloudy? Will that make the end result cloudy? What do you use to empty the bucket into a keg? I have not seen any metal funnels anywhere locally just plastic. Would they work for this?

Thanks

The wash won't "clear" as much as it will "settle"... Once the solids have dropped it's a matter of choice as to how "clear" you wait for it to get... When in doubt, wait a bit longer... You'll know when it isn't getting any "clearer"...

Cloudiness in wash should not carry over into your spirits under normal circumstances, but off tastes and smell might... Simply siphon (rack) the fluids off the yeast/trub on the bottom of the fermenter...

Plastic funnels are just fine for fermented wash due to the low alcohol content... Distilled spirits at high ABV should only contact glass, copper, or stainless steel, however...

Maybe y'cn make a copper funnel. I guess tin(plate) would be OK too?

easier & cheap funnel can be made by chopping the bottom off a glass bottle!!chea
