ever clear is grain alcohol, that means that it can be made from any grain, whatever is the cheapest at the time.
If you know how to mash grains you have 1/2 of it made the other is running it threw a reflux still. if you want it real
clean run it twice.

you should look it up in Wikipedia and read the top paragraph. grain neutral spirits. just make some neutral, or some neutral from grain if you're picky about such things. I'm not, personally.

sorry, dunder beat me too it :)

DWWG makes a very smooth neutral, I've found.

Okay... I need some help with this one. Everclear is 190 proof right? That is 95% ethanol and 5% water from the atmosphere... am I correct so far? If I am, what is the diff whether you use grain or if you use sugar? I use a mini-bok and get 190 virtually every time using sugar. Some recipes give better yields than others, but the product is always the same because I toss heads and tails. I know I am missing something here, so someone please help me with this one.

the 5% isn't from the atmosphere, it is from the wash / still charge. small difference, but difference nonetheless. I personally am not sold on the necessity of grain for high class neutrals. I think it's just more economical.

ever clear or pga is made of grain..as dndr said any grain. there is no big diffarance between a sugar or a grain alchol at 95% its gonna be pretty much odorles and tastles after refluxing. so use the cheapest fermentable source. JMHO for what its worth. just be careful of such strong drink

Always. I cut mine 50/50 with spring water... you are right... I took a swig of 190 proof as a teen and will never forget it... lost my voice for a minute... that stuff can cause your body to go into shock, possibly fatal. Thanks for the advise.

Well, I have just run 3 litres of 95%, using the rice vodka recipe. I added some boiled wheat and barley just for fun.

I'm drinking it now with soda and it is the closest thing I have ever got to Stolichnaya vodka. I know there is only 5% of the wash coming through, but I can taste it. If I used a rum wash I would be tasting a very neutral rum. I think the wash does make a difference that you can taste in a good vodka...
just my 2c...

I have a buddy who makes Glug for the holiday season and I still check with him every year to see whether he wants 151 or 190 proof neutral spirits (Everclear) before I run any off for him... Some states can only sell the 151 proof while others can sell the 190 proof... Handled without respect can be very dangerous...

I promise you one thing from experience, the 190 drunk straight, will either "cure what ails ya" OR you don't give a damn if you get cured.

Did you add it to the wash or during the distilling? Thanks, bd.

They do not sell this in Washington state, I was told you have to have a prescription for it. What a affliction do you have to have in order to get a prescription for Everclear. Had to go to Oregon to get it for $35.00 a gallon. This is why I make my own.
