Baking Pan silicone is it safe.

Post by Vickypoint »

I was looking at the wife silicone baking pan the other day and was wondering if this type of silicone would be safe to use as a gasket between a flange on the top of my keg.
Any thoughts? :D

Only if you can find MSDS documentation that confirms that it is safe with high temperature high %ABV alcohol vapor and liquid... Better to be safe than sorry...

Thanks Rad, Unable to confirm any specifications on that silicone. Made in China, so I will stick with my simple cork gasket. :)

Cork should be solid music grade cork, not composition sheet cork held together with glue or rubber...

Not meaning to hi-jack a thread, but what are thoughts on teflon gaskets? Wine suppliers offer both silicone and teflon gaskets, and spec wise they both look good and are FDA approved, but the high ABV environment is an unknown for me. Thoughts?

BBQ and other new distillers, if you use the search function you will find answers to almost everything related to plastic and anything else. It's a great feature in this forum and well worth its use.

Blanikdog and Hookline, I'm a moderator on a couple of forums myself and I echo your advice many times a day. I assure you that I have not posted any question without a prior search, but the search engine seems to either refuse the search due to the number of hits, return an exceedingly large number of hits, or come back with no hits at all. My questions at this time are pretty basic, so I'm sure the information is out there, but it's not easy to find unless you know the specific terminology needed to filter a search. But I'm learning...........I think. Thanks for your patience with the newbie. :)

Hi Temp silicon baking pans etc are graded for food consumption, BUT they are not graded for prolonged exposure to alcohol as most recipes do not call for this. The ones I have are rated for 450 F, but I still would not use them for gasket material. It may not exactly be a saftey issue in the traditional sense, but I have found that if I wash these silicon sheets and muffin pans WILL absorb the taste of certain dish soaps and they will be tasted in food after cooking.
Lemon Soap flavored fish was quite a treat....blech.
I could imagine the tatse of a bad wash leeching into a finish.

BBQKing, you may not have noticed it but there is also a HD Google Search link immediately below the page header... It provides a much more flexible search than phpBB provides... I also administer several Invision Power Board forums and run into search problems, but not as many as phpBB... When all else fails, try the Google search...
