Airing low wines?

Any advantage?

There's a lot of mention of airing out the product from the spirits run to help in both blending and ageing.
But what about the low wines?
Does it help at all to air them out for a while before the spirits run?

Only to a minor extent because you will be reheating the low wines to above the airing temperature so any low alcohols will be removed during the process... Same goes for any off smells... It surely can't hurt, however...

Don't entirely understand what you're talking about there rad, could you expound on that a little more? if you're talking about the second run, well the airing would take place before that... and if you're saying that it would all come out in foreshots anyway, then why is it beneficial to air your spirit run? things get distributed throughout the run do they not? Just trying to understand what you're getting at.

by the by, I leave my low wines in a keg with a coffee filter over the top. like rad, I figure it can't hurt :) I think a few folks do similar stuff, might have been hook or husker that I read of doing that. One of the two green names starting with an H anyway :lol: I just thought why not and copied them.

Simple potstiller. Slow, single run.
(50 litre, propane heated pot still. Coil in bucket condenser - No thermometer, No carbon)

I usually leave my low wines sitting in a cheap stainless stock pot with a loose fitting lid, for a few days, maybe a week, before doing the spirit run. Seems to work off a fair chunk of the stuff you want to get rid of anyway (the lighter components, with lower boiling points).

But I don't always do it.
Be safe.

Thanks guys. I thought for a moment I might be asking a dumb question.
I usually collect several day's stripping runs for my spirit run.
From now on, I'll be leaving the lid off the tank.

Maybe it'll help, maybe not. Can't hurt.

Funny how letting a fresh distillate sit a week seems to get rid of that "raw" smell and smooths it out. Wonder if its anything like opening up a bottle of wine and letting it breathe awhile? Seems O2 helps us alot here and there in our endeavours.

That got me thinking about deliberately adding O2.
You could use hydrogen peroxide - that would give pure oxygen and water - fairly harmless.

Oh, hang on a minute. Didn't the V2 use ethanol and hydrogen peroxide as fuel? :oops:

kiwistiller, yes, from a time aspect I was referring to just diluting the low wines and then only airing the results of the spirit run... I should have quantified the time between strip runs and spirit run... I wouldn't wait for the strips to air and delay my spirit run solely for the purpose of airing... That was what I should have stated... I can see now how my first reply was somewhat ambiguous...

ah yip no worries. I wouldn't wait to let the air out either, but anything that happens while waiting for enough low wines I'll take as a bonus :)
