CO2 danger?

Post by Coyote »

Ok guys I have not found an answer to this.
I set up my new "man cave" which is an old 16' X 8' X 8' tall walk in cooler
Walled off 3 feet in the back, insulated, installed a door, lights and heat

Even at 10 below zero it is very easy to keep the room at 76-78 degrees

My rolling fermenter rack will hold 12 - 7 gallon fermenters
In addition I have a 55 gallon food grade barrel set up on rollers

My question is this: with the possible amount of CO2 off gassing
what should I be concerned with?

As I remember from HS science class CO2 is heavier than O2.
Do I need to worry about venting?
Should I employ a floor level exhaust fan?

Just don't want to walk in to the fermenting room one day and get hit
square in the face with a CO2 baseball bat

Your thoughts are eagerly awaited

Thanks

Id be more woried about the heating, than that of the fermenter. even electric burns up o2.

The Man Cave is pretty tight but not air tight
Space under the main door,ect.
Keeping the fermenter room at 76- 78 degrees the rest of the
building stays about 55- 60 ish.
Have to open the main door more than a crack when cooking a mash
or running the still as the temp will jump into the 85 to 90 range
pretty darn quick - about 45 minutes to see it climb to 80 degrees plus
with an outside temp of 20 degrees

Opening the door to the back section should introduce more than enough air to dilute any buildup of CO2 that might accumulate... I wouldn't add additional ventilation at the expense of needing additional heat... If you're really concerned just leave the main door ajar when you first open the back section, but I doubt that this will be necessary...

""you could throw the cat in there first , if he falls over dont go in"

if you dont like the co2 in there, run a blowoff tube outside.

Not that I don't like it
Just wondering about the safety aspects
of that much off gassing

The amount of CO2 coming off a regular size hobby ferment probably ain't much more than from a couple of people breathing normally. A small vent or two should be plenty.
Be safe.
Be discreet.
And have fun.

Why not introduce a couple of larhe leafed house plants.

They'll grab that CO2 and introduce oxygen

Make you feel more tropical too!

I suggest NOT cannabis sativa though

Drunkmore: You maybe confusing Carbon Monoxide with Carbon Dioxide. Monoxide is oderless and lethal. Dioxide is inert and heavy (forms an invisible layer on the floor). Monoxide (like from car exhausts) will form a complex with the haemoglobin in your blood so it can't carry oxygen to your brain and you get cherry red coloured lips, and will quietly slip unconcious and die. With Carbon Dioxide (like from your ferment) if you were in high concentrations you would suffocate because of the exclusion of oxygen. But long before this you would experience hypoxia with respiratory distress and be heaving for breath. You would obviously leave the container and leave the door open for a few minutes while the CO2 flowed out. If this was me I don't think I would be worrrying about this or installing a vent that would take your heat out and possible let vermin in.
