Re: parrot
The most successful distiller should be able to build from a picture. Screw ups and fixes are inevitable. I've been homebrewing for years and and recently started distilling. I built my still from looking at different pictures and truly understanding how a still works. And for the record I am not a handyman and never soldered anything until a couple of months ago. Search parrots on this site and build your own based off of a single picture or design your own after looking at multiple pictures. It's just some copper and solder. Good luck.DCT wrote:any link for a step by step build on a parrot?
thanks
Re: parrot
I've gotta agree with cornwhiskey on this one... Step by step instructions shouldn't be required for most stilling related hardware... If you can't think on your feet while building in the workshop what are the chances of being able to think on your feet during a distillation run...???
View... Understand... Put solder to copper... This hobby doesn't require precision measuring with a tape measure, micrometer, laser level, and inclinometer... Close enough will generally suffice... My other half has a Harley Davidson Tee shirt which reads "If I have to explain, you wouldn't understand"... In short, it's a seat of your pants kinda thing by nature...

Here's one for you to copy, use 1" tubing for the alcometer tube to prevent hydrolic effect giving a false reading.

Re: parrot
The product goes into the funnel, down to the bottom of the 1" and fills it. There floats yer alcometer. After filling the 1" the product overflows into the cup and out through the parrot beak in a continuous flow. The alcometer floats accordin to the % alc in the 1" as the product flows through it. There's nothing more than what you see on the outside

cornflakes...stripped and refluxed
Re: parrot
got it, thanks for the help, now im going to go build me one fancy parrot....will post a pic when finished
Re: parrot
ok, been teaching myself to solder, getting the hang of it & is kinda fun. question
what do you use to clean parrot with & how to check for leaks? also i got a flat sheet of copper & hints for making a funnel???
im pissed i got ripped by the turbo stomper guy, think i can build my own still, will keep practicing on parrots...lol
thanks for getting me motivated!!

Re: parrot
To make a funnel, mark and cut out a half circle on a sheet of copper, mark the center on the flat side, and then curl each half together to form a funnel. you then solder the two edges together, and cut off the point to match the diameter of you feed pipe, and then solder to your feed pipe.

Of course you can. Your butt joints look better than mine.DCT wrote:think i can build my own still
Soak in some vinigar and put the wire wheel on the outside.
Trample the injured and hurdle the dead.
Re: parrot
ok to run threw dishwasher?
Re: parrot
I do like the milled look the fine wheel makes on tubing. Plus it can expidite some of the solder runs.
But I can't hardly debate this with the beautiful art work that old dog builds.

That's what I'm talkin 'bout D C T.
You done stepped up and got some "doin' it" goin' on. I'm with you on the turbostupid (sp??) still. I got one too. I have run it a half-dozen times and the pot is now cracked at the top rim. I'm waiting for the sum-bitch to fall apart mid run and drop the load of charge over my stove.
. Good thing I'm finishing up my new rig and have a keg for a boiler. Good luck on the build.
I learned to solder as I rebuilt my still. It's funny how after you get a couple pieces of copper together and looking half decent, all of a sudden you start to thinkin', "Hey, I can do this
".
Good Luck

ok that damn mother f-ing funnel was tuff, my 1st on was a bust, the 2nd on I got right, just tested it & no leaks....wow im proud of my self, now i just hope my alcoholmeter dont bottom out, its on order, probably should have waited untill i had it, but think i had enough room, over 12 inches, not sure how long those typicaly are? i will post a pic soon of my finished parrot & 1st solder job!
Re: parrot
12" is fine, just put a bit of scrubber at the bottom, it will stop you cracking your alcometer when you drop it in.

Re: parrot
my second parrot, thought i was creative, but just found a simillar design on here, im going to hammer out a custom bowl from sheet copper....for a old body man this copper is getting addictive, cant wait to start distilling.
Re: parrot
You gotto be carefull when you start building things out of copper, you can get addicted to it.

I put a 1/4" turn ball valve at the bottom so I can dump my fore/head shots out....Just an idea....

Ozone.
Pretty neat idea. Does it work as well in practice as it seems in principle??
