Welcome aboard.

As far as the law is concerned it's still illegal to distill your own booze.

The list of countries where home distillation is legal is short... While some countries do offer licensing, guidelines usually dictate that the distillation must take place in an outbuilding...

The List
New Zealand
Ecuador

Hmmm, and sugar cane production in Brazil (cachaca)?

There are roughly 30,000 small producers along with a few handfuls of large cachaça producers in Brazil. Because the distillation process is relatively easy compared to other spirits and because sugarcane is so abundant in Brazil, the business can be open by anyone.
